Arrow AMD Set to Unveil New Strategy Next Week

Advanced Micro Devices is quietly laying off massive amounts of people ahead of a major announcement that is set to take place next week, X-bit labs has learnt. The world’s second largest designer of x86 microprocessors intends to unveil its new strategy next week that will be different from the existing one.

AMD is in process of firing from 10% to 15% of staff (up to 1500 people), primarily from marketing and public relations departments, said a person familiar with the ongoing situation, who declined to be identified as the proceedings are not made public at this time. AMD has laid off four vice presidents, including Patrick Moorhead (corporate vice president of strategy and corporate fellow), Dave Kroll (vice president of global communications) and two others.

The massive layoffs in the marketing/communications/PR departments are conditioned by several factors, X-bit labs understands. Firstly, the new chief executive Rory Read is expected to hire a new chief marketing officer shortly. Secondly, the company is about to reveal a new strategy, which will cause a number of changes within the chip designer.

    I commented on this elsewhere.

This restructuring is AMDs attempt to improve its profit margin. It will in no way affect consumers. (Except that a few of them will be jobless.)

AMD seems to be all over the place lately.
Hiring and firing top level execs right and left, and then ~cleaning house~ on the very guys who are most in close contact with their customer base,........Marketing and PR.

I thought that the marketing campaign for Bulldozer was inspired, (those guys did a great job making us want this product) but the actual product produced was nothing special. Yes, I understand that it's a brand new architecture, and as such, it's special. But the public was led to believe that it was gonna be something spectacular and it's not. While benches for the Octo-Core version are just lukewarm, the temperatures that consumers are having to deal with are much hotter. It's bloody power consumption is legend too.
But they should have been honest about it. They should have said that it's a start, but that they had a ways to go to tweak the platform a little.
They should never have fanned the flames of our anticipation like they did, because many gamers who were with them, are now through with them.

It's lucky that they have such a good range of mid level products to sustain them. Their video cards are kick-ass products and the APU's really rock for the price.

Their new "strategy" had better be to put all of their turds into one rucksack.

If you believe that, I have swampland in Florida to sell you. The desktop market is pathetic and the server market us not much better now and with the Bulldozer debacle, AMD is forced to lay off. It's that simple.

Not interested in your Florida real estate. I've no love, and no sympathy for anyone on the US East Coast, who year after year, set up properties and then complain when the hurricanes come knocking. **** them. Let them drown.

It's a shame to see a company that 5 years ago was doing the impossible and beating Intel at its own game, I remember when I got my shiny new X2 4200+. Poor AMD, they're lucky they acquired ATI and have some good budget chip's I hope something good comes with the changes their making.

No, "get your sh*t together" was a popular saying when I was a Young Man.

In the Army, we called it "get your sh*t into one rucksack".

    Same thing only different.
