Default AMD Working on Socket FM2 Athlons

Although AMDs focus has shifted to APUs, the company is not about to kill off its legendary Athlon brand anytime soon.

CPU World reports that AMD is planning to refresh the Athlon II X4 lineup with three Piledriver parts for the new socket FM2 platform, but we dont have a launch date yet.

The Athlon II X4 730 is a 2.8GHz part with a 65W TDP, while the Athlon II X4 740 comes in clocked at 3.2GHz and features the same TDP. Both pack four Piledriver fours and 4MB of L2 cache.

The unlocked Athlon II X4 750K is also a quad-core, but its a 100W part clocked at 3.4GHz.

There is still no word on Turbo clocks, although it is very likely the new Athlons will feature Turbo Core technology. Also, no word on pricing yet, but since we are talking about Piledriver parts with no graphics, they should end up on the cheap side.

Athlon= slow CPU's. Time for a name change AMD. Not only is the product marginal, so is the marketing team.

Athlons are made for coporate desktops and regular desktop users not for gamers. They serve a great purpose in their own right. Just not for me. they have to make this product line or give the entire market space to Intel lower end offererings. not a good idea when many corporate and school PCs use this line of CPUS.

They need a new name. Heck, Phenom has come and gone. Athalon was before and after Phenom.. People will associate the name as an old CPU.

True a new name will not hurt. Remember Duron was the low class to Athlon. Then Phenom Replaced Athlon. Athlon took 2nd place. So when Phenom is replaced it should be the 2nd class. I'm assuming the FX monicker would be that replacement or some variant of it. Since this line of Phenom is reaching its EOL maybe we will see it reinvented into the lower class cpu in the future. Phenom is better then Athlon anyways.

Phenom did not take place of Athlon. They ran some Athlon II's with Phenoms, I think they they had no L3 cache and were Phenom chips if I remember.

Athlon is a great name for their new CPUs. It has brand recognition already.
I'd love to try one out when they're released,....and I probably will.

Jim, you treat them like the redheaded step child after Bulldozer didn't go well, but AMD is necessary in the marketplace.
They build CPUs that work fine,...just not as fast as you like. No big deal.
I still use a Phenom-II part and it's not bad at all.
Without them around, Intel would probably double in price.

Im meaning Phenom was in the top position in the line up. Name wise. And none of the Athlon II had L3. Thats why they were in 2nd place. Similair to Pentium vs Celeron. Now the Celeron name is being faded out and the lower chips are now Pentiums. So if this continues AMD will replace the Athlon name with Phenom and the new flag ships will be FX or some variant.

Probably chips that do not meet advertised specs. AMD will disable cores and or L3 and lower the frequency. AMD uses this practice all the time but a smart move to sell all manufactured chips.

I run a AMD Bulldozer rig. There is a noticble difference in everyday computing compared top Sandy and Ivy in jkust aboutr every app including surfing the net. Before you guys joined, i was the biggest AMD fan alive. I realize we need them.

If I had 10k to spend on a system I still wouldnt build an intel system. I just cant justify to myself spending 1k on a cpu and anoherr 400-500 for a board to support it. Its just nuts. I dont have a problem with intel. They ,make great gear. The pricing and previous dirty tactics in the market kind of turned me off on them. Kinda of like how I wouldnt by an Apple product if they were the only ones still in business.
