Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Great Read! He make some valid points and great argument..
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
True enough. Was an AMD Athlon X4 user before. For lower to mid-end use, it is wiser to go with AMD. They are cheaper and you do get that needed performance just right. Odds slowly shift to intel as you increase your budget I believe, when going to mid to high end setups.
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
I still love Intel for my video processing, they just cannot be beat. For everything else though, there's no reason not to pick AMD, especially if you are just going to be gaming.
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Funny, I wrote an article on my own webpage AMD or Intel - CannonFodders with more or less the same idea/conclusion about what is enough CPU power and how well priced AMD is :)
Consumers has totally misunderstood how much CPU power they need for gaming. They think the AMD CPUs are to slow to keep up with the rest in their pc, but the truth is that even the 4 y old phenom II 980 (x4) can give a HD7970 all it needs in games like BF3.
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Neither article addressed the biggest reason to support AMD right now: AMD does not employ Foxconn, and Foxconn is Satan.
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Very poorly written article IMO. The guy does not make any mention that AMD is not far off Intel in multi threading and the new Vishera processors render very well. He does not make the important facts pushing AMD.
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Wasn't this article written before vishera was available....
I think allot of AMD mind sets changed once Vishera was available, Allot of ppl had doubts with AMD prior. However AMD was able to deliver this time around and made allot of AMD fans happy...

I do agree he does lack to mention a few important factors, Mutli-thread apps is one big push for AMD and its important to know that allot of applications going forward is looking to take advantage of the threads. Although allot of app can perform in single core just fine, We are starting to see more and more apps and Games that will more reliant on the extra cores available for the extra boost in performance.

I agree the article is lacking an important aspect, that's why i added it to my own! Hehe :) AMD or Intel - CannonFodders
or read on the copy-paste here:
Multi or Single-thread performance?
http://www.cannonfodders.com/uploads...566846.png?246graph: sweclockers.com
The more cores and the more threads, the harder it gets to write the program code if you want to utilize them all. Since it's more difficult and more time consuming, thus more expensive, games today tend to be tailored for fewer cores and threads. Today the standard is 2-4 cores, anything more than 4 is utilized poorly.
That's why when you venture beyond 4 cores or threads you really won't notice much difference in games and regular applications, but the cores goes to waste entirely. You can for instance run multiple programs like spotify, internet browsers, torrent, msn, skype, ventrilo, teamspeak, facebook or fraps at the same time as you play your favorite game without impacting in-game performance.
Multi-thread is where AMD really start to shine! The 8 core FX-8350 which is priced similar to the i5 3470 can easily outperform the more than twice as expensive i7 3770K in some applications like Z-zip. In other multi-thread applications it can keep up, but maybe not beat it. Keep in mind that it cost less than half.
As we concluded in the chapter above, the FX8350 deliver more than enough performance for games today. Also since games are becoming better and better at utilizing multi-thread we can expect to see an increase in performance over time. The FX-8350 will probably be able to keep up for at least 2-3 more GPU generations.
So if you buy the FX-8350 or its cheaper brother, the FX-8320, you get 2 things;
- The performance needed for games today and those to come
- A "free" multi threaded monster
For a cheaper than intel price!

I tried to keep it short and simple.

Nice but 7 Zip does not tell the entire tale and most games are single threaded so gaming is also not the entire tell tale. 3570K and 3770K are better in single threaded and Vishera does very well in multi thread.

Agreed, that was my intention, changed the wording;
The 8 core FX-8350 which is priced similar to the i5 3470 can easily outperform the more than twice as expensive i7 3770K in some applications like for example Z-zip or POV-Ray 3.7RC6. In many others it can keep up or sometimes beat it as well. Keep in mind that it cost less than half.
Re: Article: Why you should seriously consider an AMD PC by Jeremy Laird
Can't you just run those 8 cores in Crossfire and get 4 supercores?
Instead of shutting down or idling unused cores, that's where the tech needs to go.

The build I am working on now for my son is a AMD gaming rig.
