Default AMD Preparing Six-Core Desktop Processor

AMD is planning to create a desktop implementation of its Opteron "Istanbul" monolithic six-core processor. Codenamed "Thuban" (named after a star in the Draco constellation, which means Dragon in Arabic), the new processor will be based on the socket AM3 package for compatibility with existing and future desktop core logic

That's just cool. If they had triple channel memory and a new chipset, I'd SOOOOO regret going to Core i7.

It's going to compete with i9. I hope intel wins so my $500 investment in a high end 1366 board will not go to trash.

by then i'll be ready to move to BULLDOZER!

edit: assuming it can at least keep up with intels at the time, or is priced correctly. my point was that this ci7 was going to last a while lol

oh, god, i'd certainly hope not. the P4s were an abortion. (so was the barlecona release, and i really like how the P2s cant go past 4ghz on 64bit OSs)

AMD is so irritating. WHERE IS THEIR MARKETING?!?!? Intel wasn't outselling them in the A64 days because Intel made a better chip. They still haven't learned. It's about appeal, not quality. Look at Apple.

Why'd you have to show me this??!!! Right as I'm getting ready to build my AM3 system. My GF is going to kill me if I upgrade again next year as well. Guess I'd better start saving as soon as my AM3 gets built, lol.

So true, far too often a poor quality product wins out, Intel vs AMD, Microsoft vs everything else, Apple in everything they do, and the old VCR vs Betamax.

    AMD plans two six-cores in Q2 2010

    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/17006/1/

We don’t have many details, but we can confirm that AMD plans to launch two six-core desktop CPUs next year. This should happen in Q2 2010 and if AMD holds on to this date, it might come a bit later than Intel’s Core i7 980X.
AMD’s six-core 45nm part is codenamed Thuban and it comes with 6MB L3 cache, C-state performance boost as well as DDR3 1333MHz support. As we said before, it supports AM3 motherboards and it should work in most existing models.

We don’t have any specifics about the clocks or what will be difference between these two SKUs, but we can confirm that they are planned.
2 Thubans (6 core AMD chip) slated for Q2 2010, if they have a decent clock these should provide really good performance in multi-threaded apps.

This and a 5890 would make a Killer Dragon system.

    Definitely on my to-do list.

New chipset is indeed on the way. Can't give details just yet but it's in the works, no question.
