SamCR3 said that he had "clicking noise" problems with them horizontally mounted, but he had them on a fan controller and it was happening only when they were running slowly.
I've used them both ways and haven't had any noises. I always keep them set on max speed since they are so quiet.

I ordered 4 of these couple weeks ago for the same price... and tried them out..the PWM version will make that noise in horizontal placement if you have it run them with a fan controller in low settings. I got the annoying whine buzz noise, but at full speed, they are fine. This only happens with the PWM versions of these fans, however I ended up reordering the regular 3pin versions (they were on sale for $7.00 each 2 weeks ago), since I am using a fan controller at low speeds in horizontal position they are fine.. If you are going to run these in low settings, get the 3pin version, Unless you plan on running them at full speed all the time, then get the PWM versions.

Read some reviews of these online and you will notice allot of people and reviews have had the same problem with the PWM versions. But 3pin versions are great.

so noise when not at full speed so should buy non pwm (no noise at all even at push or pull horizontally at full speed?), i saw some posts from cougar stating that they were looking at that problem for the pwm version but i don't know if they fix it yet, and if i did i don't know what batch does newegg has, new ones or old ones....
I also saw a thread on weighting down the fan blade with a nickle does take the noise away at low speed, i haven't got a chance to test it out though.

I haven't had a problem with the 3pin ones, but at full speed, against a rad, these fans can get loud.. but in a open case, they are fine..
the PWM versions I ended up putting back into the box and will use them another time, maybe for a build that will require PWM fans on a cooler.

so beside gentle typhoon ap15 and noctual ones for rad, what else is good and silent?, i always know those two and cougar vortex nothing else
I have 2 vortex for the h80 and they are great but thinking about full custom water later on so these are not great for horizontal mount, because my tower is right next to me and i don't want it loud when not gaming......

The swiftech Helix fans are not bad.... they are priced about the same at 7.99 for the 3pin models and slightly more for the PWM.
They are not as silent as the APs. but quieter then my Cooler Master Sickle flows...

I had them installed in my test bench for a while before changing them out for some delta fans....

Cougar are great fans, just depends on what you are using them for, They just aren't the great fans for radiators...

Here is my collection of Cougar Fans that I've collected over the last few months.
    10 3pin models and 6 PWM versions.

Swiftech Helix are good fans, They are quiet against radiators and don't create the turbulence effect like the cougars do. Push a decent amount of air and are prices great at $7.99 a fan at sidewinder's.
You may also want to look at some yate loons, medium speed fans, they are quiet and push good amount of air. The one thing I don't like about the Yate Loons are the adapters they use. it has the stupid 4pin molex attached to it.
Don't know if they have changed that, but thats the only reason I don't buy them, but they are good fans for rads.

My friend's build uses like 12 of those, but he modded all the fan headers to use 3pin fan headers and sleeved them, they look great that way, but he took a long time modding it the way he wanted it..

I've used them both ways and haven't had any noises. I always keep them set on max speed since they are so quiet.
Yep, clicking noise when I mounted them horizontally on a radiator at anything less than full speed. Had this problem when running the fans off of the PWM fan header or a fan controller. They work fine mounted vertically though. I'm using them on both of my 120mm AIO liquid coolers mounted at the rear of my two cases.

If money is not a huge issue (don't know many who have no budget restrictions) the Noctua NF-F12's are hands down the best PWM fans available. I have four mounted in push/pull on a 240 rad and they are dead silent but move a ton of air with excellent static pressure.
