Default Dark Matter Redux -- It begins!

    All,

The time has come. Dark Matter (the machine linked in my profile) has become a bit long in the tooth. Or so goes the excuse. Really, it's just time to build something new.

Out with the old in with the old and new.

This will be a frame-up rebuild, but much of the hardware will be/seem the same as in the original machine.

I'm a big fan of the Fractal Design Define Series, and while this limits my water cooling options (or at least makes it tough), I'm sticking with Fractal, and have selected the Fractal Design R5 as my case for this project.

    Fractal Design

Since Josh reviewed the quite excellent MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon ( here ) and I really like the aesthetic of the board (all black and silver) I decided to use it for the base of my build.

Beyond that, I've selected the EK Supremacy EVO Nickel/Acetate Waterblock, and I'm leaning heavily towards one of the new Seasonic Platinum PRIME PSU's.

Of course, not being an AMD guy (despite AMD's fantastic efforts with the RYZEN), I'm going with an i7-7700K as my CPU.

Here's where it gets a little messy. Because of the limited space in the R5, I've pretty sure I'm going to run with a pair of Black Ice Nemesis 240 GTX radiators (essentially so I can run a single dual radiator loop, and add the Graphics Card to it). So, optimizing the air flow is a priority. After a little reading, I'm considering some Phanteks PH-140MP's a pair each on the front and top radiator in push configuration for the top, and pull for the front. I'll add at least one 140 fan as an intake fan, 2 or more if I can squeeze one into the bottom after I put the PSU and Res in.

So. With all that said, I'm looking for a good Pump Res combo. I'm looking for (D5 Vario?) and probably a vertical res, although I'm thinking with a PSU cover, a horizontal Res/Pump might be nice too.

The current Dark Matter is using a EK DDC X-RES Top 140 with 3.2 Pump (PWM) Pump/Res, and that seems to work well. So I may use that again, but I'm looking for suggestions.

I'm also hemming and hawing about a video card. Thinking I'll stick with Nvidia, probably a GTX 1080, likely an EVGA.

I'll be booting off an NVME SSD (the which will depend on sales), and will fill the two 2.5" SSD Slots with a couple larger SSD's (Probably both Crucial MX300's).

    Unsure about tubing...may try hardline...dunno.

I'll add more to this thread as I move along. Suggestions Welcome!

    S.

p.s. And yes, Josh, I'm on that Fan review...just got free of a many week visit by the family...

You may want to look at a D5 pump and tube res combo like a 140 or 170 depending on how much room you have
I have res and pump as separates and should have done the combo, and will probably switch it out in the near future.
Other then that I like everything else on your list which should do you just fine

    Thanks Vinny,

I looked at the 140/170 this weekend, and I'm certainly considering them. I picked up one of those power supply covers you mentioned in the DarkBase Pro thread, and I'm thinking it might make a very nice mounting surface for one of the pump/res combos...

I ended up ordering the PSU cover, and two of the SSD covers (with MSI Logos), I also ordered the EK Supremacy Evo this weekend.

Will wait until the 4th to order some of the other bits I think....

    Thanks for the Feedback Vinny!

UPDATE: The EK Supremacy EVO arrived yesterday, and I pulled the trigger on the PSU today! Parts are coming together.

I think the PSU cover will be in sometime next week, so I should be able to evaluate the idea of the the XSPC Photon D5 170 pump/res next week too. Sadly, I think I tossed all my OEM HS/Fans so I can't even test this system until I get my WC setup...(go figure).

I opened up the case, and took all the drive bays out. The R5 is now a blank canvas. The Pro Carbon sits in there very nicely, and the black and silver aesthetic looks sweet.

Can't wait to get this build under way!

UPDATE: Ordered my RAM, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and some Black Ice Nemisis 240GTS Radiators (2), and the Waterblock and Backplate for the EVGA 1080GTX FTW ACX 3.0 Video card that I missed the Newegg sale on...<sigh>.

Just need, tubing, fittings, fans, pump-res combo and perhaps an SSD or two to finish out the materials - AND the damned GPU!

PICS: Just got the PSU in, so I prepped the case and did my initial PSU & MB fit.

This photo (slightly twisted due to camera angle) reveals the MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon in all it's glory. That black and silver theme is really showing here.

Yeah, but I think I'm going to run a 280 up there, and a 280 in front....

Today was a good Microcenter day. They had a kick ass sale on SSD's, and I scored a 500MB 960 EVO NVME drive for boot, and 2 1TB 850 EVO's for data storage.

    Happy 4th all!

    Thanks Vinny,

The original runs on a single 240, so I figured 2 x 280 should be enough, even when I add the video card loop in there.

There's a question: Loop order. Thinking CPU out -> Rad 1, Rad 1 Out to GPU In, GPU out to Rad 2 in, Rad to out to Res/Pump, Res/Pump to CPU in. Given that my GPU dissipates more than 100Watts greater BTU than the CPU, I'm a bit undecided about this order. It seems like the cleanest order using a single pump.

Also, what fittings would you recommend? I used BitsPower for the first two machines I've water cooled, but I've been looking at EK & XSPC as well...

Your rez rad and pump order should be just fine as is

I am using a mixture of fittings manufactures at the moment but leaning toward XSPC below is a link to were I'm buying from good prices quality products fast delivery.

Thanks! Titanrig is why I noticed the XSPC fittings. These 12 Packs caught my eye, as the cost/fitting is something like $4.50, and it seems like I paid $8/fitting last time I bought any Bitspower.

You do realize no matter how you route the system you will never do any better then ambient temperatures in my
situation my computer sits about two feet from a floor vent so it picks up the cooler air entering the house lol!
so it stays a tiny bit cooler then my house temps when idle.

Right I bought the six packs
