Default Microsoft to increased Xbox One RAM 12 GB?

As rumors are continually made about a change in the final specs on the Xbox One we have now heard rumors from a member on the website Beyond3D that Microsoft is actually asking developers about an increased GPU upclock and a increase in total DDR3 RAM to 12GB.

“Plus, I did say it was a rumour so neither the upclock or RAM increase are confirmed.
And it’s not just that the veracity of the rumour isn’t confirmed, but that the rumour itself does not claim MS are definitely increasing the clocks or RAM.

Apparently, the story apparently is that MS has gone to devs for feedback on a few different things, two of them being an increased GPU clock and an increase to 12 GB of RAM (another thing on the list was storage for ‘tombstoning’ - I’m guessing flash cache)

Devs have to list which spec changes they prefer in order of importance. So nothing is confirmed as of yet, just options MS is getting feedback on.

However, I do have someone else telling me (also from a dev source) that we shouldn’t be surprised to see 12GB of RAM in the final box and that it isn’t as hard for MS to do as we think.”

Just curious what they would need 12GB of ram for? I mean most games only use 2GB now. The PS3 and Xbox360 each only have 512MB. This seems to be a huge increase in ram. I don't think developers are gonna opt for a 12GB ram. Now the upclock for the GPU. Developers are probably loving that.

The massive increase in ram is because both systems are now running on X86 hardware. They are now just PCs. They are not just from games anymore either. They are the meant to be a complete media and gaming center. All home entertainment can be access from one device.

Isn't that what most people use their PS3's for? I use mine for everything, Music, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Picture & Video Storing and Sharing, Blu-Rays. I mean surfing the net sucks but I have Laptops, Desktops, Tablets, and Cell Phones for that. The only thing missing is cable and word processing. lol

PS3 can't be compared. You're comparing apples to mutant sized pineapples. Your PS3 does each of those things one at a time. The new systems, much like PCs, will be doing them all at once, if you so wish.

Again Different hardware architecture. Software was different. The degree of detail between PS3 and PS4 is a 8 year difference. Thats like comparing the PC you played Doom on to the one you played COD2 on! lol Just because you played last gen on 512 doesnt mean it will come close to 4k gaming, 3D gaming, 4k movies on and on. Its a full and complete PC based system to do everything you can do on you own custom pc on a console and it will designed to last the NEXT 10 years. No just today.

I truely doubt they would raise the final cost of the console. There are already complaints it $100 more then the PS4. Raising it more would be a disaster and a half. If anything they will lower the final cost to $50 more then the PS4. Console makers lose money on the console, they make money off games sales, online subscriptions, online media consumption and DLC ect ect. Sony didnt make a single $ on the PS3 until 5 years after it came out. Microsoft didnt make any money on the 360 until 2 years ago. The only one that made a profit on console sales was Nintendo. They were in the positive the entire time due to ridiculous amount of console sales.

You misunderstood what I said. I said 2 years ago not in years. Microsoft did not make any money off of the RROD issues. They set aside $1.5 Billion to deal with the RROD issue. Replacing and repairing units. Extending warranties. Shipping cost on and on. It did not benefit them in any shape way on form. What it did prove is that people loved the Platform so much to deal with the headaches and buy replacements unit when they had to just to keep playing. If Microsoft continues that winning platform it created with the 360, the Xbox One will do a lot better then people are saying it will. All of this Hype over a snafu by MS will mean nothing on launch day. I am willing to bet the Xbox One consoles will be sold out in 48 hrs at the vast majority on locations. Its all about the Ecosystem of the platform not hype that sells consoles. MS has built a very very expansive one for the 360 and Xbox One. I own a PS3 and sometimes I am angry with Sony for not doing the things MS does with the 360

    Thanks Sandy, that's deep man
