    Default EK WaterBlocks Issues

Halt on EK Nickel Plated blocks - 11/06/2011
    Dear EK partner/user,
As EK is looking for lasting solution for nickel plating issue (concerning corrosion because of silver coils and copper sulphate additive) we decided to halt sales of nickel plated products till solution is found and tested. Our resellers were advised to halt sales too.
We cannot put users into position, that we replace products and corrosion starts again on new product. Hopefully we will find an answer and tested solution in short while.
We will update you as soon as we have any news.
However, If customer insists on buying EK nickel block, we offer a customer full 24 month warranty on material, manufacturing and corrosion.

How can we dont talk about it?

Where do you see anything that mentions not to talk about it ? Eddy explained what was going on and the reason the sales were halted, furthermore, EK was also nice enough to contact their customers and and make them aware of their situation with their nickel plated blocks.

EK also mentioned that they would update customers as soon as they have any news on the solution to the problem. There's a lot of company's that would not have gone public, and waited until they found a solution before mentioning anything, leaving consumers wondering what the problem was.

I would call EK. If you have the affected product, I believe they are giving 30 days. If the time passes the deadline, you may be sol.

Are you suffering from this issue? have you taken apart any of your blocks to check?
If you have, I'm sure that you should indicate this to EK and offer to send pics etc. kind of try to help them fix the issue. It might also be useful to them to know if you DON'T have this issue. In this instance you could give them all the info about your setup such as type of coolant and which additives, kill coils or no, when purchased, those sort of details which might allow them to find this issue more quickly.
All in all the first rule is to be civil and helpful and then maybe then you will get the same in return as well as a reputation for being someone prepared to understand that $h!t happens sometimes no matter how much testing was done prior to putting items on sale.
It might also be noted that I hear Eddy has had health issues recently so this too may have some effect on the speed with which this issue gets resolved.

Historically EK have always been there for us watercooling troops and come good in the end so Don't panic

I sent a support ticket to EK explain all things and saying the reason that I want a RMA is this issues, but if they recommend any coolant or something like that I'll keep using their blocks.

My blocks are too young, I only use them for 2 weeks, they're in the warranty yet, and I wont open or disassemble them cuz i'll lose the warranty.

Stan, EK published the will only honor this issue for 30 days. They are supposedly contacting the customers but I specifically read 30 days. When I get home I will try to find the documentation. It was a letter from the president if I remember.

"The replacement form can be filled in until July 31st, and starting with August 1st EK will no longer replace products with such damage as the reason of the damage will be widely known and customers still using these additives will do it under their own risk. The replacement request can also be possible only for the purchases with invoices dated up to June 12th 2011."

This subject has been done to death on other forums...

Bottom line, EK didn't actually do anything until their feet were held to the fire publicly.
They still haven't admitted that the problem is related to their plating, which is thinner than what would qualify for the very lowest ASM grade for an anti corrosion nickle plate.

When a brand new never used block was subject to macro photography that showed that the nickle plating is pourous and has many flaws, some very visible to the naked eye on that sample, Eddy resorted to essentially calling everyone involved a liar.

If their little independent test is to be believed, distilled water alone, distilled water + PT Nuke, distilled water + silver kill coil, and distilled water + PT Nuke + silver kill coil all are to blame for the failure of their nickle plating. They say we need to run anti corrosion additives in our loops to protect, of all things, the nickle plating...
The testing did not address the quality of the actual plating or materials used to make the blocks, just the corrosion found on already failed blocks.

Eddy has no answer for why these things affect the plating on his products, but not other manufacturers nickle plated products...

Members of another forum, and Gary from Sidewinder computers, are sending at least one brand new EK nickle plated GPU block to a professional metals testing lab to analyze the plating and the copper.

I'm a bit annoyed about the whole thing. I bought nickle plated parts for the corrosion protection, now I'm finding out that the plating on my EK parts is only cosmetic, and per EK requires protection via corrosion inhibiting additives.
It seems to me that if you are going to manufacture PC water cooling products, an important step would be to be sure your products are suitable for use in the environment found in the typical water cooling loop...

Eddy's handling of the situation on various forums, and blaming his customers for a problem that is looking more and more like a manufacturing/plating problem, has completely blown any interest I had in any EK products in the future.
As things stand now, I'll never buy another EK product, plated or not, and will recommend against them whenever the subject comes up.

BTW, Gary at Sidewinder Computers/Petra's Tech Shop stopped selling EK nickle plated products, and offered full refunds for those bought in the last 60 days, a week before this latest announcement from EK.

Props to Gary for being in front of this issue, and involved with the independent investigation into the cause.

Jim, it was longer than 30 days, people have until July 31st to fill out a replacement form and send in 3 photos of the damage to the plating to be able to get a replacement. Click on the notice from EK's site to enlarge. the 24 months I mentioned, I believe is the standard warranty on EK blocks

    Caleal,

EK is point blank trying to get out of long term warranty claims. If they think everyone will find out about this issue they think buyers are stupid. I will never buy anything from EK due to their lame ass response. Stan, how the hell is EK gonna contact every customer? I think that is rediculous to imply. They could send emails and try to call, they will not contact everyone and the July 31 deadline will screw customers.

Jim, they have a customer list for everyone that bought their blocks, on that list is every ones email address so it's very easy to contact their customers.

I receive notices and PR that sent to hundreds of people at the same time, when sending the notice, all EK has do is type a single notice, and click on reply to all, that way each person on their customer list that included their email will receive the notice.

As far as the EK block plating problem, unless EK does their own plating, I really wouldn't blame them, sometimes it's just not worth buying anything that's been plated no matter what it is.

They don't have everyone's. MicroCenter and others shelf the product. In store sales do not always get email addresses and some may bypass the email leaving them unaware. I am not nieve about the policy but not everyone will get wind of it. Not a good response in my book from EK.

If they farm the plating out to an outside vendor, EK is still every bit as 100% for handling the problem for their customers as they would be if they were doing it in house.
