    Default TIMs: your poison?

i've pretty much stuck with coollaboratory liquid metal on my dual socket systems over the years, but switched to shin-etsu a bit ago, then to tuniq (when parting out old boxes, the hsf were difficult to remove and clean, re the liquid metal). i really like the liquid metals thermal results (the foil never did it for me), but have been anxious to try this (waiting for ivy bridge to hit) for my daily driver. what have you settled on as your go to thermal interface?

I still love Arctic Cooling MX-2

I have used the 'grain of rice' / 'pea' methods, I believe all my future mounts will be the 'pea' method...

Most of the top tims are within 2 degrees. I run custom water so it does not make much of a difference to me. I use IC 7.

Red I agree with you there on the pea method, much better spread. Would still prefer to see this testing done on a lapped processor though, to see what difference it would make on how TIM spreads.

    Hypothetical Situation:

However, I have to wonder if you were lap both the processor and the heatsink to as close to "perfectly flat" as possible with some insanely high grit sandpaper (i.e. 12,000 grit), would you even need a thermal paste? Or if you did, would would then the "Spread" method be better, if you wiped as much off of each surface as possible. Seeing as how 2 perfectly flat surfaces would then only have microscopic sized indentations for air to hide, this might prove to provide a much better seal, and heat transfer.

I'm going to be sending Rockler Woodworking an email to find out what kind of backing they use on thier Micro Mesh sandpaper that ranges from 3200 grit to 12000 grit, and give it a try if it is paper backed instead of felt.

I would agree with MX2 and the "pea" method on everything BUT the HDT coolers where the line method works best.
the thing is in the video he isn't using constant pressure as you would mounting the cooler. you can see him readjusting and "may or may not" let air bubble form.

Innovation cooling says pea methos for all surfaces. The Tim fills the gaps.

when I had a HDT the pea method didn't work as well as line method, the pea method was always 7-9c warmer then the line here is a nice comparison with the same results as I had. http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=5

I have IC Diamond and Artic Silver here. Have not tested them against one another, but I use a spreader to apply the TIM always. It's how we did it on the Space Shuttle's Coldplates and Hotplates.

Andrew froom innovative cooling tested all the methods an we went thorough this before. Pea size is best neil. He has transfer sheets to show.

I accept that his proof is valid and Pea size is better.
But I like to do it my way. And since I'm the Boss of me,........

Besides, I don't ever have heating problems. (being one who loves a good cooling fan)

    Default Re: TIMs: your poison?

I was a Artic Silver person for a long time until I tried IC diamond.. I have since changed all my PC's to IC Diamond.. I have noticed 3 to 4 degrees in dropped temps in the same set-up. Nothing changed but TIM... I also use the "Pea" size method...

That IC Diamond worked great for me Stan, although it took a couple of days to cure.
