Strange Heat increase ?

Hi all, thanks for reading.
I OC'ed my pc sometime ago with your help (i7 950 noob help (slightly different))
And she has been running 100% awesome since,....untill today !
I came in from work to hear the pc loudly working away and showing a steady 46-58 deg temp and the Corsair H80 sounding like it was stuck on position 2,
funny thing was the pc was just sat idle ?
Since OCing the rig the H80 would only self switch to P2 when under 100% cpu load and then only ran at 60-70deg, it would then back off to P1 after what
ever application finished its 100% cpu need and then cooled off to a steady 26-34deg.
I have ran a virus scan, ran malware etc with 0 infestations.
I have stopped some services and start ups, rebooted and still she runs at 48 deg ish ?
So before i diss mantel the rig and blow out the H80 radiator, and re seat the CPU on some fresh paste, is there anything else that could cause this temp increase ?

Update, i ended up turning it off last night as its been running for over a year without being switch off.
I turned it on when i got in from work and all appears normal so far, been running for 1hr now at a steady 28deg and super quiet.
I will monitor the temp and post back later.
