Default Overclocking an Intel i7 980 (not X)

Hello everyone, this is my first post in this forum.
I have recently bought a new machine and built it a few days ago. Had to go to work the second it was done but i can't wait to get home and start messing with it.
The first thing i want to do is to overclock the CPU. I have read quite a few guides about overclocking but i can't seem to find anything on the non-extreme version of the 980.
And all i got for a cooler is the stock fan that came with the CPU.
Could you guys help a guy who has never overclocked anything in his life?

hi welcome to PureOC. our experts here did not recommend to OC if you only have the stock cooler. a lot of heat produced when you overclocked the cpu.

pay some time to read the thread 4Ghz Club in CPU Overclocking and you will learn a ton of information how to overclock. and ofcourse if you have questions feel free to post.

Noctua NH-D14 is one of the best. Yes we wouldn't recommend you to overclock it with stock cooler because it won't be handle the heat.

Are you open to any of the LC units from Corsair, Antec, or CoolIt or do you prefer to stay with AIR cooling for the processor?

    Welcome to Pure OC

If you read any of our cooler reviews, you will notice that the stock coolers fail when overclocked. I've owned a couple of 980X chips and currently own two 990X chips, but I have never owned the non extreme 980. When you get home can you send us a photo of the stock cooler ? If you received the new tower cooler with heatpipes you may be ok for 3.8-4GHz. If not, I do have a brand new one that came with my 990X that I'm willing to give you as long as you pay for postage and live in the US, if your interested send me a PM.

I would prefer to stick with air, simply because i've never used water cooling systems or anything else for that matter. And novice hands mixing electricity and water don't seem like a good combo.
On another note, thanks for the offer of your fan Doctor_Death But i live in Norway, quite far from the US :P and i can post a picture of my fan tomorrow when i get home. Thanks for the replies guys

Check some of the reviews on the self contained LC from Corsair, Antec, and Coolit as Kipper suggests. Installing one of them is about the same as installing a air cooled unit. There is no learning curve as there would be with a full blown WC system.

Good, then start reading the 4Ghz Club thread until you get the new cooler. Overclock the 980 has the same principle as 920 in my guide. Your chip have the multiplier locked at 25x instead of 20x as for 920 but you chip will kick in at 26x when turbo enables.
