Fx 8120 vs Phenom 965BE C3?

Well I've tried searching and I find nothing, just tags.. maybe I'm a moron, who knows.

But my buddy is selling his AMD FX 8120 for $75. He is getting the 8350.

I've got the Phenom 965 BE C3 stepping now running at 4.0GHz.

My question is, would I be better off with the 8120, and over clocking that, (auto with the mobo)?

I don't really game much, I play Minecraft.. Warcraft 3 (bnet), LoL, and that's pretty much it.

Would I be better off staying with my processor, or would I see ANY improvements with the 8120?

I don't care if I spend the $75. He's a friend, I'd be helping.. I'm only looking to see if that processor is better than mine. Like if the extra 4 cores will do anything?

Faster boot times? faster.. load times for games?
I have no idea.. You're all better with this stuff than I am.

They are pretty identical in terms of performance. The 8120 isn't really a upgrade.. its more of a newer chip that took over the phenom series. While the 965BE is a great chip and also performs great for games. If that's all your really looking for, then there isn't a need to upgrade.

Another question is do you have a mobo that supports the FX chip. While the 965BE can use some of the older boards. the FX 8120 will require a 8 series or 9 series mobo.
So if you need a mobo to go with the 8120, then your looking to spend more money while not really upgrading CPU performance.

If no mobo upgrade is needed and you have the current chipsets, then it can be worth it just to get newer tech, but not really needed since they perform about equal to each other with maybe the 8120 taking a slight advantage in multi threaded apps due to the additional cores available.

I would think about the FX-8350 that chip your buddy is getting.

Right now I've got the ASUS M5A99X mobo. It supports AM3+.

And I'd like to get the 8350, it's pretty nice. A lot better too. But at the moment I don't have the funds for THAT one. lol

I may grab it, just because it's an 8 core, and uses less power. Or I'll grab it and try to sell it to someone on CL for $100. lol

With the M599X board you won't have any issues running the 8120, but yea, the real upgrade would be the 8350. But the FX8120 isn't bad either. I have the 8120 and 8150 and in terms of performance, they are about the same. The 8150 clocked higher.. The 8120 is a overclockable chip so if you want to make the switch you can. At $75.00 I would grab it just to resell..

Considering it sells for $158 new on Newegg.. any idea of a price to sell used? Could I go more than $100? it has the stock cooler as well. It's just used.

I have an 8120 and it's a good chip. I have mine clocked to 4.4GHz 24/7 at only 1.4 volts vcore and stock cpu/nb volts. Chips runs pretty cool and is very reliable. If you really want to see if there is any significant difference, we could run the same benchmarks and you could compare your results to mine. They have to be ones that isolate cpu performance. I'm getting the 8350 very soon so will likely sell my 8120. I'm going to ask $125 shipped and see if I get any takers. Otherwise I'll just keep it.

i have a 955 and it's a pretty good chip. have mine overclocked to 4Ghz @1.4v. i have no experience with fx cpu's so i cant comment much on that but i will say like stated before if you want a fx chip go with the 8350 over the 8120/8150 chips.

Another option is the 8320. Just overclock it and get performance similar to the 8350.

The only new AMD CPU I have is a FX-4170 quad-core. It's pretty nice for everyday gaming and it encodes video pretty quickly too.
I imagine the FX-8350 is like night and day to the FX-4170.

I'll probably save for the FX-8350 and sell my FX-4170 and Phenom-II 980 Black once I have it here.

Got my 8350 today!! I'll post a pic and hopefully install it tonight. Can I just drop it in and go, or do I need to reinstall the os? I know I need to flash my bios but that's simple.

You can drop it in and go... no need for fresh install...
Flash the bios and update the drivers and your good to go..

love to get one of them too, but someone I did some work for just stiffed me with a bad check.
Tomorrow I'm off to see the local sheriff and file a complaint about it.
