Default Trouble overclocking Fx 8350 with Sabertooth 990fx and Vengeance 1866mhz

    Hello,

This is my first post here and I hope to become a regular on this forum as it looks very good and you all seem like lovely people.

Currently I am having some issues with Overclocking my Fx-8350. Though the CPU itself is fine and I can run it at a 4.5GHz overclock on automatic Overclocking settings, if one tries to overclock with the sabertooth 990fx you end up being able to boot but then dumped with a blue screen before login to windows.

My memory should be at 1866Mhz as this is the stock clock for this particular memory. But when my motherboard runs the MemTest it clocks down to 1333mhz?
I even just go in and set the memory using the drop down options in the BIOS to 1866mhz but then I get the blue screen.

I have even tried Overclocking with this by removing the auto settings and trying an overclock but if i do this my memory clocks go to some very strange values.

Does anyone have any experience with this motherboard?

Welcome to Pure OC ! Do you have all the power saving features disabled ? if not disable them and try again, and let us know what happened.

    Thanks

Yes I have tried it with all the power saving options off.

The ram just doesn't want to sit at 1866, I have been told on another forum to put my timings at 9-10-9-27 however I am at work until 6 (uk time) and will try it as soon as I get home.

They are automatically down clocked to 1333 with memtest. I am sure I have tried these timings before which work at 1666?

I want the memory to be as fast as I can possibly go with my new Fx-8350 which I will be Overclocking on the weekend.

I have a Sabertooth in the post somewhere (it's coming from a friend for me to prepare it for our sub-zero OC session in a few weeks) and an FX-8350 upstairs. I will try to give you a hand if you wish. My suspicion is on the memory controller voltage for the moment but you might be lacking some voltages somewhere else.

What voltages have you got set at the moment? The bigger and more complete the list, the better.

Currently the only thing i have tried with the voltage is the CPU voltage from its stock to 1.457 I think (couldn't tell you precisely) I'm not a very good Overclocker when it comes to CPU's. Graphics cards I'm fine with but I want to learn so any help you are willing to offer I am very grateful for

I tried following a tutorial on YouTube but he was using the Asus ROG crosshair (Which I did have but RMA'd twice! So I got a sabertooth instead) that board obviously overclocks a lot better (when it works) so his tutorial didn't really help me.

I have corsair vengeance 1866Mhz ram which is running currently at 1468mhz with a 4.3GHz and 4.5 turbo. (pretty much running stock with the "turbo" option on the EZ screen.)

You want to turn the turbo mode off as it is going to cause you no end of problems at higher clocks.

What sort of temperatures were you hitting at that voltage/speed?

    What cooler do you have?

I will be able to help fully either tomorrow or Monday (depends when RM decide to deliver it) as I will be able to tell you exact settings to change that are relevant to your board.

I will help as much as I can for now but it'll be easier when I have the board in my hands.

Hi welcome.. Like themaddutchdude said if you are looking to OC manually turn the turbo mode off as it can hinder clocks at higher speeds.
running 1866 ram should be no problem. I have a set in my system running 1866mhz with the cpu only OC to 4.4ghz. However even at stock settings it shouldn't be a problem.
If your ram has XMP profile, be sure to enable it in the BIOS Settings and set the ram to 1866mhz on the freq side, in most cases it should default to that anyways.

I have turbo mode turned off on an OC profile i use as a base for overclocking
My idle temps are around 39-42 C

CPU Cooler -> Freezer 7 PRO Rev. 2 ∑ CPU ∑ Cooling ∑ ARCTIC (Artic freezer 7 PRO rev. 2)

I understand I'm not going to be hitting 5Ghz on this, However at the end of this month I am buying a water cooler. Not sure which one yet however.

On that cooler, I wouldn't even bother with overclocking. The idle is a tad high to begin.

How hot does it get under something like Intel Burn Test? Use HWMonitor to check the CPU (not the core temps!) temperature. It may also be called TMPIN0 or 1.

    Sorry for the late reply!

It gets to around 64C then I **** myself and close the burn test ha-ha. I was going to buy a 240GB ScanDisk Extreme SSD with my next paycheck in the 28th, but instead I am going to buy the Corsair H100i. So keep an eye on this thread or I could PM you when this turns up?

The Swiftech H220 offers better cooling, is much quieter, is expandable and only costs about $20 more.

Have you gotten any farther on this overclock? I have the same board, processor, and ram and I can only get it to 4.5 stable.

Unfortunately not, I got a nice tax return last week and almost went to buy all the stuff I could dream of for my PC. But then I decided to buy a car and get myself a block of lessons instead.

Maybe next month I will get some upgrades and try to push the overclock further. Tbh I think with this processor we would be better off getting the Asus ROG for Overclocking. (Which I did actually have then I had to RMA it and opted for this one as a replacement...)

EDIT: Bought a Corsair H100i and got it for £60 brand-new.

    Are you Watercooling? @4.5Ghz

Well actually last night I found a whole set of settings I was missing including the phase load line and stuff like that. I had to manually set my fsb and ht speeds to 2200mhz and im running 5.0ghz fine right now and not cracking 45C with the h110. I cant get it to run prime however, but I havent had any crashes or bluescreens and Ive been doing League of legends, BF3, Minecraft and some others on it plus Cinebench, furmark, and kombustor.

Hey. I was lurking and I found this post so I made a profile to reply.

Did you have any luck solving your ram problem? I'm also using the FX 8350 on a Sabertooth with 1866 RAM. I found that the RAM is really sensitive to timings and voltage (it's 1333 RAM that's tested at 1866 by Gskill at 1.5v, not sure if Corsair does the same thing). At first my computer wouldn't post when I set the RAM to 1866, but once I found the right timings for 1866 everything ran fine. If you go to the tools page in the BIOS there should be an option to view the suggested RAM timings (SPD) for 1866MHz.

You might also be able to set your computer to D.O.C.P. mode and choose a RAM profile. Haven't tried this myself, but I've heard it works.

Hope that helps if you're still having trouble with your RAM.

Oh, and another thing. If you use the turbo setting in the bios (either in the EZ Mode or the OC Tuner in the advanced settings) it'll default your RAM to 1333. If you want your RAM higher than this, you have to manually set it. Again, see the SPD info in the tools tab of the BIOS for the correct RAM timings.
