Default FX 8150 in Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 overclock help needed

    Hi all,

First of all, thanks for this awesome site.
Been looking around for a while and am surprised how many skilled overclockers this site has.

I'm the happy owner of a FX-8150 which sits in a ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, both running great. My first build.
Even though my PC is running great, I feel that my hardware should be able to run better and faster, and I've decided that I want to look into overclocking.
Currently I'm only running an overclocked ASUS GTX 660 and I would like the rest of my system to follow it's footsteps and get overclocked as well.

I have never overclocked a whole system before so I'm hoping for some wise and helpful words from some OC gurus, here on the forums.
I know my way around the BIOS, and have been looking at guides and videos explaining how overclocking works but I haven't found anything where my CPU and motherboard are used.

What I've done so far is only to turn off power saving options in the BIOS and would like to know what I should do (step by step) to overclock the rest of my system.
I have Hardware Monitor, CPU-Z, GPU-Z, Speedfan, ASUS GPU tweak, Heaven and Prime95 installed and ready.
Any information, tips and/or guidelines are very welcome.

    PC specs:
    AMD FX-8150 (3.6 GHz)
    ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Corsair H70 with 2x Gentle Typhoon (1850/m) fans
    Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB), 1600 MHz.
    Corsair CX 750M
    Corsair Force 3, 120GB SSD
    1500+500+250GB Western Digital Black Caviar
    Fractal Design Define R4
    Windows 7 Ultimate

    Thanks in advance.

Okay, the basics of overclocking go as such:
    1) increase the multiplier until you cant stably run the system anymore
    2) increase the voltage bit by bit until you can

Pretty much it. You can usually reach around 4.0 GHz without having problems with that chip just on multiplier increases.
    Good luck!

    That sounds really easy.

Gets more complicated when you try to hit higher speeds, but if you arent trying to push it past its limits, you should be fine like that!

After some hours of testing, I've managed to reach 4.1GHz stable.

    Multi: 20.5
    Volt: 1.296
    Temp: 58c

I tried the same settings with multi on 21 but got a BSOD. My thought here was that the CPU didn't get enough voltage so lowered the multi to 20.5 and that gave me a stable machine.

Should I overclock the RAM as well?
I know there is a forum for RAM clocking but since I already have this thread I thought I might as well ask here.

Thanks for the help so far. Really appreciate it.

You can try it but you will more then likely end up with an unstable OC. Just write down all of the current OC settings before you get started. or if you board supports saving OC profiles. Just in case it is unstable you can just revert back to current settings.

If it more then likely will result in an unstable overclock, I'd rather not do it.
My PC runs great now and I do have a lot of RAM installed so I guess it's not really necessary.

    Again, thanks for the help.

Stay with your achieved OC, 4.1GHz on Fx 8150 with VCore 1.295, is an pretty good OC, there is no need to OC your RAM.
    BTW Welcome to POC.

More than that you run into temp restrictions. I have pushed my chip to 5.6, however I have liquid cooling. Watch your temps under load and be gentle with any changes. Try to keep your voltage as low as possible to keep your temps down. That OC looks great though! Good job.

Yeah as TCC said, you want to try to keep voltages as low as poss, the higher you go, it will start to degrade the CPU and Chipset, as long as P95 can run for 3 or more hrs with no error's you got a golden OC,

and Welcome to POC, hope you find comfy place to stay a while

its a nice overclock, but a learned that if you put the cpu/nb vcore a bit higher you can drop the vcore of the cpu.
I could not get my cpu at 4.5 before because the vcore I had to use for that was more then 1.475.
then I set the cpu/nb voltage to 1.275 and I run 4.5 at a vcore at 1.4352 in the bios, this give me with llc on ultra a vcore of 1.428 and under load 1.452.
I have the vengeance also but the low profile 1600mhz.
I set them at 1866mhz with a stock voltage, so 1.5v
I changed the timings to 9-10-9-26

How did changing the cpu/nb voltage effect your core temp?
I'm running a stable 4.2 right now but wouldn't mind trying to get it a bit higher, as long as I can keep it stable.

    Welcome to PureOC.
That OC looks good enough to me.
