Default advice on o'clocking this i7 extreme

hi guys, came across this website while looking and reading on how to overclock my I7 extreme 975 bloomfield DO ( or whatever its called ) 3.33ghz processor - ARK | Intel® Core? i7-975 Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, 3.33 GHz, 6.40 GT/s Intel® QPI)

    im using this motherboard currently - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.0/1.1)

this is my graphics card - HIS 7950 IceQ Turbo 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI/HDMI/2xMini DP < HD 7900 Series < Desktop graphics < Products | HIS Graphic Cards

and this is my ram - Corsair Memory Vengeance Black 12GB DDR3 1600MHz CAS 9 XMP Triple Channel Desktop - CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9 - Scan.co.uk

on reading some of the posts on the i7 4ghz club iv followed a few of the steps and cpu-z shows -

multiplier is set to - 21
bus speed is set to 199.92
    QPI link is - 3598.16

this gives me 4198.27mhz @ 1.312V on the core voltage

im sure i have turbo mode on as im sure i had set the multiplier to 20 but hey.

im relatively new to all this overclocking, id like to reach a stable clock of 4.5ghz, i have a good tower and some pretty good cooling ( on air ) current cpu temp on those above settings are 42c ( is this ok ? )

sorry if i have worded this in upside down back to left english but im unsure how to word it

    advice is appreciated

    Hi dan

Big subject with a lot to learn if learning is what you want to do, however, it may not be necessary..... it might be possible to take shortcuts rather than truly find the best settings for your setup so what it comes down to is.....

Do you just want to get the rig running faster or would you like to explore the settings in enough depth to know that you did it properly ??

Also.... can you tell us how your cpu is cooled

thanks for reply grumpy, currently running at -

    core speed - 3942.58
    multi - 29
    bus speed - 136
    qpi link - 3262.83
    vcore - 0.928 - 1.232 (jumps up and down)

previous post settings made my pc crash/freeze on starting counter strike source.

id just like to break the 4ghz barrier if poss and its cooled by air, installed the venom voodoo yesterday with arctic silver 5 paste and the case is a cm storm stryker with the 2 side fans moved to the front so air is blowing into my case rather from the side.

its being very temperamental sometimes its not booting even to boot screen, other times its booting to windows load screen and freezing and other times its booting into windows but then when i start a game it crashes and just freezes, games i play are Css and black ops 2.

I did a walkthrough with Lee-R a while back about what is involved i7 950 noob help (slightly different) that you might like to read through.

I'm not sure how high you can go with an air cooler but the principles will be the same regardless.

If you decide to take this step by step in order to find the individual limits of your rig you will know how to proceed if you decide to upgrade the cooling etc.

There is an actual guide I found that is perhaps clearer than the walkthrough I did for Lee at: 3 Step Overclocking Guide ? Bloomfield and Gulftown | TechREACTION - Part 3

thanks for replies grumpy, had a good read, seems im starting my aim to high so iv gone back to basics following those posts.

currently have the following settings :-

    core speed : 3779.57
    multipier : 21
bus speed : 179.98 - set in bios at 180
    qpi link : 3239.63
vcore is currently at 1.376 (in cpuz) and 1.376 (in CPUIDHWM )
temps running at a max of 74c with 5 runs of ITB.

    quick edit :-

    core speed: 3990.05
    multiplier: 21
    Bus Speed: 189.97
    QPI Link: 3419.40
VCore: 1.280 (in cpuz) cant understand why it was higher in last overclock ?

That is a big step to be already at cpu overclocking. temps seem a bit high to me but using as5 and on air maybe that is not a surprise running burntest or LinX

What limits did you find on bclk and memory?

thanks for replies grumps, this is all exciting, iv had it at 4.5ghz before but that was just using a stock cooler and i only had it like that for about 30mins or so before i put settings back, i was just curious, but now i have a more high performance cooler i wanted to see if i could make it more perm.

    current settings are :-

    Core Speed: 4199.77
    Multi: 21
Bus Speed: 199.99 (200 in bios)
    QPI Link: 3599.81
    Vcore: 1.328 (in cpuz)
Current Temp: 45/46c highest read at 47c

i was in middle of replying about 10mins ago with those above settings and running ITB but i bsod, iv since been back in and adjusted my vcore to 1.3 and seems to be running ok at the min, im yet to run another ITB, iv chewed my finger nails off already.

oh these are my bios settings if iv remembered them properly, roughly what you and lee had altered :-

    c1 c6 ect disabled
    dram timing quick
    intel boost disabled / standard
    xmp enabled
and ram multiplier ? set at 8.0 which gives 1600mhz to my memory.

ok since last reply with above settings @4.2ghz and vcore at 1.328 iv been able to run a full test of IBT ( 10 passes ) with no errors and bsod's (crosses fingers ).

if i can crack 4.3 and poss get nearer 4.5 it would be amazing.

oh temps through the last IBT at above settings was :-

    lowest between 67/69c
and highest recorded was 74c thats using CPUID HWM

can this be pushed a little more or am i pushing it already ? i know temps are advised not to go over 80c (ish)

highest recorded temp while running the above was again 74c

Dan, It is a while since I did anything with 1366's but I have the feeling that we need to consider the different ways in which you can achieve an overclock on your cpu which has the higher multi's available.

I'll be back in a couple of hours then I can read some notes and maybe explain this to you.

What you have just now seems ok but we can discuss in a bit more depth later

Default Re: advice on o'clocking this i7 extreme

CPU frequency = bclock x CPU clock ratio

QPI frequency = bclock x QPI clock ratio

Uncore frequency = bclock x uncore clock ratio

Memory frequency = bclock x System Memory Multiplier (SPD)

at stock I believe the i7 975x is

    CPU clock ratio = 25

    bclock = 133

    QPI clock speed = 3200

    QPI clock ratio = 24

so what should we be setting as a target?

If we try for an ambitious (on air) 4400 then what has to change??

if we leave the cpu clock ratio at 25 then the target bclk must be 176

if we set QPI clock ratio to 36 then qpi will run at 6336 (plenty high enough)

memory target is 1600 + up to around 10 % so max around 1760
because the memory multipliers available are 10 or 12 this means that:

    8 x 176 =1408 or 10 x 176 = 1760

So, what does this mean for you??

we have determined your Target settings

your Bclk frequency goal is a lowly 176
your cpu frequency goal is 4.4Ghz
your memory speed goal is ddr3-1760
your uncore multiplier setting is x20

NB. The uncore clock must be set to at least double the ram speed so based on the above maximum ram speed you will need to find the uncore ratio that is nearest to or above 3520 / 176 = 20

With this information you can now set about finding your overclock voltages in the same manner described in both the walkthrough and the guide

feel free to post questions but apart from the unknown of the ram I would expect this to be a better setup for your cpu

ok thanks grumps, i will certainly try those settings but tbh, 4.4ghz is a pretty decent o'clock considering it A. works and B. i can keep the temps down, but i will certainly try those settings and report back shortly, thanks for taking the time to help mate, muchly appreciated !

haha yes i found that out the hard way grumps, you must have edited post just after id read it to go do them settings, it didnt like the uncore at x24 so backed it down to x20 but every other setting i followed and seems to have booted fine.

so cpuz is currently reading :-

    core speed: 4399.26
    multiplier: 25
    bus speed: 175.97/176.01
QPI: 3167.47 ( for some reason is slower than you stated, will have to check its at x36)
vcore is on auto @ 1.360v
    current temps are core 0 (53/54) core 1 (50/21) core 2 (51/52)

do i now cross my fingers and touch some wood and pray to the lord jesus christ that if i run IBT it will pass haha

thanks so much for this grumps !

if i can crack 4.3 and poss get nearer 4.5 it would be amazing.

oh temps through the last IBT at above settings was :-

    lowest between 67/69c
and highest recorded was 74c thats using CPUID HWM

can this be pushed a little more or am i pushing it already ? i know temps are advised not to go over 80c (ish)
4.2 GHz is the sweet spot. Get stable there and you are golden. Pushing to a higher overclock can be entertaining and provide a great feeling of accomplishment - realize though that the gains are not likely to be noticeable versus 4.2. I settled for 4.2 GHz.

You can safely have peak temps up to around 86c while stress testing, but don't go over that. You do NOT want to be anywhere near the 80s for your normal usage.

You mentioned in a subsequent post that you can do 20 passes of IBT / LinX without failures. That is absolutely what you want to confirm for the first phase of stability testing. The last phase is to successfully run Prime 95 for a minimum of 8 hours without any "workers" stopping and without crashes. Run it for fewer hours if you want to settle for "good enough" stability (note though that failures are quite well known across the 5 to 7 hour range with imperfect overclocks). Do 10 hours for extra confidence.

My settings are listed in the chart: Core i7 4Ghz Club & Overclocking Guide
Alternate System: i7 3930K @ 4.6GHz, ASUS Rampage IV Formula, 16GB Corsair Vengeance, AMD 6990, Samsung 840 Pro 256GB, Cooler Master HAF XB, Seasonic X-1250, various NoiseBlocker e-Loop fans.

thanks for reply zero yes i was happy with the 4.2 but i wanted to try and squeeze that extra .1 out of it, just because im greedy lol.

i have still got the same settings as grumpy has stated although the uncore is set at x20 and not x24, x24 made my tower sad and wouldnt start.

so, iv tried to run IBT twice with no avail, its decided to bsod on me once and freeze on me the other, iv since been in to the bios and re adjusted the vcore which is now 1.4000, i dont fancy going any higher.

temps while i have cpuz and cpuidhw and this window open are (c1 55) (c2 51) (c3 52)

so il try and run ibt again, see what happens...............

edit.......ran ibt after i wrote this, 30secs in, bsod. im at a loss now......
