Question New to OC, I have a few questions (i7 980)

Hello PureOC, today I took upon myself to learn, read and inform myself about my cpu wondering if I could OC it. I have an i7 980 (locked), I been reading and googling about it and I have found that my core multy is locked up to 25x yet I can still OC my i7 980, would I be wrong?

I spend 130$ today and ordered a Corsair H100i closed loop water cooler, Arctic Silver 5 High Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound 3.5 Gram Syringe and Arctic Silver ArctiClean 1 & 2 Thermal Material Remove & Surface Purifier 60ML Set. I'm aware that the H100i comes with pre-applied thermal paste and will clean it up to use Arctic Silver 5 instead of the pre-applied one. I have a Corsair 800D case which I think there plenty of room for, I would like to know if anyone experienced with installation of this H100i cooler would please let me know on what side it would be better to mount the radiator on? or any information they would like for me to know before hand?

Here are a quick run down of my computer specs
    -Intel Core i7 980 6 Core @ 3.33GHZ
    -EVGA X58 FTW3 Motherboard
    -Corsair Dominator GT 12GB 3X4GB DDR3 2000MHz
    -SLI EVGA GTX 580 Fermi 3GB GDDR5
    -Sound Blaster X-FI Titanium FATAL1TY Champion PCI-E
    -OCZ Vertex 3 120GB

As of right now with my i7 980 stock cooler I ran Prime95 and got max of 88deg C, my rig is about 3 years old, I keep the inside somewhat clean, I think the thermal paste on this old heat sink is not doing is job anymore hence max of 88deg C.

After installing my new H100i cooler, I will come back and post my default clock speeds and all the detail from my bios, I want to slowly ramp up to 4.2GHz with HT and Turbo turned off. I started reading Core i7 4Ghz Club & Overclocking Guide and will continue to read and review this guide till I feel confident.

I also have a laptop handy if I need to come here and post or research while I try to OC my cpu for the first time, any information is good information.

    thanks in advance from Moe.

    Welcome to PureOC!!!

Let me pass along a link to another guide: 3 Step Overclocking Guide ? Bloomfield and Gulftown | TechREACTION.

I have several other guides bookmarked as well, but "discovered" that one when GrumpyDaddy recently posted it for another new member. It appears to be a reasonably good starting point for newcomers to overclocking.
Alternate System: i7 3930K @ 4.6GHz, ASUS Rampage IV Formula, 16GB Corsair Vengeance, AMD 6990, Samsung 840 Pro 256GB, Cooler Master HAF XB, Seasonic X-1250, various NoiseBlocker e-Loop fans.

Thanks for all the warm welcome, today i reiceved my H100i water cooler and installed it in my 800D, I ran into one small hic up while installing, the studs was not fully screwing into the mounting bracket, I eventualy tried with my stock bracket and it worked perfectly. I admit I was sweating bullets when installing this cooler.

Right now on my default bios settings I have idle temp of 27deg C, compared to my old stock cooler around 48deg C.

I ran Prime 95 for 5 min and got avg of 47deg C and max of 50deg C.

way better than 88deg C from before now I will dedicate my time to learn on how to OC properly.
    Thanks from Moe

Default Re: New to OC, I have a few questions (i7 980)

in my EVGA bios I have QPI/VTT voltage and cpu Vcore, on the guide I am following its saying "As mentioned above, QPI/VTT is the crucial voltage adjustment for achieving high bclock stability. Default QPI/VTT is 1.15V and to reach 200MHz bclock you’ll likely need to increase this to at least 1.2V"

The problem I face is QPI/VTT voltage on EVGA is called CPU VTT Voltage and in this option I have mV selection it is set to (auto) and this does not match the 1.2V from the guide.
Right above this there an option called CPU Vcore and this one I can set to 1.2V

if anyone has information about this I would love to know more.

    Thanks from Moe

after a Lot of reading and printing/writing notes I have now reached 4.5Ghz

    Cpu Vcore 1.356V
    QPI/VTT voltage +150mV
    23x Bclock 197 = 4538
    uncore 12X

IBT 2 runs passed max temp 71deg C

now I will start setting up my memory.
