    Default 10 years ago...QX9770 Anniversary ?!

    Hi

This is my first post here.

I have -still- an old rig, a 10 years rig!. This good old "fellow" has (and still) served me well all these years, with some upgrades along the way, of course, but I am not in a situation to replace it yet. Maybe in one year or so, not sooner in any case. I know that this would sound as prehistoric, but I need to give him a little more life and I guess there are people here that may remember things about this generation and might give me some advice.

    The rig is:

    Asus Maximus II Formula
Q9650 @ 4.0 GHz with Antec Kühler 920 (first revision)
    8Gb OCZ Reaper @ 1066 MHz (2 kits, 4 sticks)
    Asus Strix GTX1060 6Gb
    Corsair PSU AX860i
Other things (Quadro K620, Auzentech Prelude 7.1)

I have been trying to get pass the 4.0 GHz for weeks with no success at all, even with 1 stick only of RAM, and tried a different stick too (OCZ SLIReady 1 Gb), anything over 445 FSB is unstable. I am not a very good overclocker but I have some experience, patience, searched for explanations (of course the the M2F sticky here is a reference), examples, tried step by step, even in advanced options as GTL Refs to cores (as explained in sticky), delay the sticks, or CPU/NB, NB strap, etc. No luck at all.

So, now I was considering two (3) options:

1- Replace memory by 2 kits of Corsair Dominator of same specs (used, of course)
2- Replace CPU by an used QX9770.
(3- Asking for your help here to try overclock the Q9650 up to 4.2GHz, for example)

Regarding option 2, I have the chance to get a second hand used at eBay, or to get an ES from a friend of a work ex-colleague, a bit cheaper (for 160€). It seems to be a C1, an according to my colleague it has been used only for renderings.

What do you think about this? Is it worth take the risk of the ES? I have read around about this but I can't decide. I would like to listen what would be your advice or similar experience.

    Thanks!

I have also seen that the QX9770 has a Tj -theoretically- of 85ºC meanwhile the Q9650 is 100C and 95ºC for the QX9650, this and the fact that the maximum recommended temp by Intel is 71C, 64C and only 55C for Q9650, QX9650 and QX9770 respectively, it is pushing me to consider the QX9650 instead the QX9770 (aside of ES or not).

I have a pre-build 120 mm water cooling system, I mean it is better than the best air cooling but it is in the low-end or average of water systems, imo. I am afraid I have no place for a long radiator in the case, so I guess I'll have to life with what I have.

So, the only advantages of QX9770 is that it starts at 3.2 GHZ (does it make it easier -than with a QX9650- to reach 4.2/4.3 ?) and that it has 1600 MHz FSB, so no need to OC FSB if I can't / won't.

Are these real advantages, and worth the QX9770 ? I want to replace my CPU (which can't pass 4.0) to reach 4.2-4.3 (if volts and temps allow).
