Hey, you're not the first feel that way, don't we are all learn from our stupid mistake?

    did you overclock your ram?
use CPU-Z or Everest program to check what your ram running at, if it is run faster than fsb (some thing like this 3:4 for the divider) then you can run it at 1:1 at stock timing or you can run at your current settings with looser CAS.

It gotta to be with one of RAM settings.

Have you check if your memory is listed in compability list from Asus site?

It's should have crash at stock speed for normal operation, unless you mixed match the ram.
Check if you have 4 stick have exactly the same CAS and voltage. If 4 stick didn't come in the same kit then it's more likely different.

Maximus is a picky board for ram compability.
Let us know what you find out.

HI everyone im new to overclocking , and i just bought this asus board with the q6600 and right away i tried overclock on crazy mode and heres what i got

cpu 3.5g ram 466x2 cpu vcore 1.4, and my cpu temp idle at 28c and i was wondering if i can clock this to 4g if yes how can i do it?

and my b1 b2 ram slot doesn't work after i try overclocking cpu lvl crazy to 400fsb, and i tried testing the ram and it works in the a1 a2 slot ,

everything was fine when i first install the system and use cpu lvl up crazy mode, but then i got greedy and wanted more and now 2 ram slots dont work anyone know why?

Thumbs down Maximus II Formula INIT ROM and DET DRAM Issues

    Hello everyone,

I'm googling for two weeks now trying to solve my problem and I'm happy that I accidentally found your board/ thread. I hope someone can enlight me on how to solve this problem. I would like to apologize in advance for my English since is not my native language (I'm from Brazil).

I've just build a new computer using the follow:

    Processor: Model : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
Motherboard : ASUSTeK Computer INC. Maximus II Formula BIOS 1901
    Chipset - Front Side Bus Speed : 4x 333MHz (1.33GHz)
    Memory: 4GB DIMM DDR2 (TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF PC2-8500)
    Memory Bus Speed : 2x 533MHz (1.07GHz)
    Video: 2x ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (1GB, 750MHz/2x900MHz, PCIe 2.00 x16, SM5.0)
    Power Supply: Corsair HX1000W
    Storage Devices:
    ST3500320AS 500GB (SATA300, 3.5", NCQ, 32MB Cache) : 466GB ( B: C: H: )
    ST31000340AS 1TB (SATA300, 3.5", NCQ, 32MB Cache) : 932GB ( S: U: Y: )
    ST3320620AS 320GB (SATA300, 3.5", NCQ, 16MB Cache) : 298GB ( D: )
    Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500GB (US : 466GB ( T: W: )

The problem started as soon I built the computer. It was hanging at Init ROM. I've noticed that pressing the Power reset button the system starts correctly however after two days the system began to hang at Det DRAM and only starts after several resets and/or Power On/Off. Sometimes I need to reset the BIOS to be able to boot the computer.

After upgraded the BIOS to the latest version 1901 everything on BIOS is as factory Defaults. The only thing I've disabled was the Floppy, the Lan 2 and IEEE 1394 which are things I don't use but even with the factory defaults the problem persists.

One thing I think it's worth to mention is that when I've managed to get into Windows I can let the computer on for days without any issue. It is pretty fast and stable and that's why I think it's some kind of BIOS configuration and not hardware fault.

I read in this Forum about the Northbridge temps issue and I went to look at mine and it's around 55/56 (SB is around 50). Should I follow this guide bellow and try to fix it?

    http://forums.pureoverclock.com/showthread.php?t=3497

Here is what I tried so far:

1 - Switch ram to white slots
2 - Manually set the Ram Frequency to 1066MHZ and ram timings and voltage from to 5-5-5-18-2T (Auto) to 5-5-5-15-2T with 2.1v.
3 - Change the battery and to not connect any fans into the MB according to some posts I've read. Didn't work.
4 - Manually set the FSB Frequency and FSB Strap to Norhtbridge from Auto to 333MHZ and
5 - Tried one stick at a time and tested the ram using memtest+ (No errors).
6 - Tested other RAM. OCZ
    7 - Tested 4 different BIOS (802, 1307, 1802 and the current 1901)

    Nothing work.

    Here is some CPU-Z screens:

    Last Notes:

I tried to collect all information I think was relevant but I will be glad to give you more in case you need. I've bought those hardware components at Amazon when I was in US and since I'm back to Brazil where I live I cannot RMA the Mobo or the memory so I need to try fix it or throw it at near garbage and buy a new one.

    Thanks in Advance

As you suspected, the northbridge temps are really high and most likely causing you the problems. I would follow that guide to reseat the heatsink for it following that guide and see if that doesn't fix your problems.

    Welcome another Canuck!
to anwser your first question; YES and NO
yes you can oveclock Q6660 to 4Ghz but not with air cooler, however it's very hard get it to stable. Since you are on air, 3.5Ghz is the max for you.

If you only use 2 sticks then install then on Blue slots, people have issues with White slots. You will have no problem with 4 DIMM occpuied at the same time, but it is hard to get higher overclocking with 4 slots used.

Have you try to reset the CMOS when it happened?

    Johnny, Welcome!

You can do that mod if you wish, you are running two 4870X2 cards, tons of heat producing from these cards into the case.

Is 50-56c is load temps or idle temps?

Do you see your problem here?
if you listed correctly, it's shown you have PC you mixed match your RAM. THIS IS A NO NO!
    you have 8500C5D and PC6400, I'm confuse?

Do you have DDR3 or DDR2?
Maximus II Formula only support DDR2

well for me the problem is i can only use the a1 a2 slot which is the 1st blue and white slot, as for the second blue and white slot i doesnt work for me.and i've tried to reset cmos and event updating bios still not working. but i just called tigerdirect getting a replacement next week, loving this board so far.

as for overclocking im running 3.625 now and did the stable test for 2hrs 100% load cpu temp at 53c max. wondering if its possible to go further since my temp seems to be really good.
my nb and sb temp is at 45c-43c while doing stable test.

as for overclocking im running 3.625 now and did the stable test for 2hrs 100% load cpu temp at 53c max. wondering if its possible to go further since my temp seems to be really good.
my nb and sb temp is at 45c-43c while doing stable test.
TD has good customer service, I never have that issues if you have no problem RMA then why not.

    What is your ambient temp?
53c load on air is pretty good.
BTW, what is your Vcore at 3.6ghz now?
you can try OC it 4Ghz for fun and try get it stable and report back let us know. I did get my to 4Ghz but didn't have time to tweaking it to get it stable.

You need to increase Vcore and NB voltage, you need more than 1.5v for Vcore to get it boot into Windows. Keep and eye on the temp.
I don't have the bios setting for this because I pair Q6600 with Maximus Formula board, it has different bios settings.

    Thanks for the warm Welcome!

You can do that mod if you wish, you are running two 4870X2 cards, tons of heat producing from these cards into the case.

It's one 4870X2. I don't know why Sandra reports as two. Anyway I did the mod and things seems to be worst. SB = 61 and NB = 54 and those are idle temps

Is 50-56c is load temps or idle temps?

After the mod: SB = 61 and NB = 54 and those are idle temps

Do you see your problem here?
if you listed correctly, it's shown you have PC you mixed match your RAM. THIS IS A NO NO!
    you have 8500C5D and PC6400, I'm confuse?

Exactly what I've asked to Ram Guy from Corsair 2 days ago and he told me that there is nothing wrong. I'm also confused!

Do you have DDR3 or DDR2?
    I've bought DDR2 and I think I have DDR2.

Maximus II Formula only support DDR2

Please take a look at those screenshots from Everest and Memset.

Now I'm really lost and about to throw this Mobo away and get back to ABIT ot Gigabyte.

Thanks to all for your help so far.

You need to work your way up from these voltages
    CPU 1.5v
    PLL 1.5v
    NB 1.45v

yes leave RAM at stock setting

    @ Johnny,
I just re-read between the lines of your first post, because the way you wrote it that caused my confusion.

Ok, you only have 2 sticks of 4Gb PC6400. You are ok here.
I need you to post your complete bios settings hopefully I can identify the problem. I think you have some settings are wrong.

About the heatpipe; did you replace stock paste with after market one?
check if there any gap between the NB/SB and the sinks, you might have it uneven mount.

By the way, did you add on washers for the NB only or all of them. I would do all of them but some people just do the NB only.
