Default Maximus Formula BIOS update required for Q9550?

Might be getting an E0 Stepping Q9550 (SLB8V). Currently on my Maximus Formula x38
i'm on BIOS version 0907 MAximus formula and was wondering if i need a BIOS update to detect
    the new chip?

Will i lose all my Saved Overclock settings/profile after i flash it to the latest update?

Aside from Deton any1 else here able to post some good overclock MHz ?

    Thanks in Advance

According to ASUS website, the Q9550 wasn't supported on AMF until BIOS rev. 1004. I am running 1201 and haven't had any problems.

Curiously, my BIOS level OC profiles are saved when I use the Clear CMOS button on AMF, but I didn't check when I went to 1201. Maybe Deton knows.

I have the older C1 stepping on my Q9550. I leave it at 3.4GHz (1.26 vCore) for 24/7 and that takes zero skill or perseverence to achieve. I can bench at 3.6Ghz (1.28 vCore) but I haven't tried for more than that as my temps hit 60c at full load and I consider that my safety point. I think the chip can do better, I'm just too broke to do a proper water setup. Did you see this thread?

no, you won't lose it if you save it under the profile.
You do need to update to the new bios that is support E0 stepping because this a new stepping.
However, this OC settings will be no good for Q9550 though because this processor don't need a lot of voltages to run, therefore you have to lower everything. It's do need higher FSB, you can get it up 4ghz, but I think 3.8ghz is a sweet spot and durable for 24/7.

You can check the OC table in the MIIF thread, I think there is a Q9550 setting. Use that as a reference (the voltages) and ignore the rest of the setting that Max1 doesn't have.

Another tip; you can write the current setting down and save it somewhere. I know it's a long list to write. Here what you can do. Go to Max1 club thread, cut and paste the bios template into Excel sheet, then change the settings according to your and save the file. Or you can save the actual bios setting profile on a USB stick by using Asus Bios Flash tool (check it out).

Thanks for all yr input guys...

Just checked the Asus website...and the new BIOS 1207 supports E0 stepping of the Q9550
    http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...Language=en-us

i'm just worried that after i moved on to the Q9550 i cannot go pass 3.6ghz then it will be a big waste to all the $$$

I'm kinda of looking at something like 3.9ghz closer to 4ghz? do u think thats too much to ask for?

Like I mentioned in the previous post, you do need high FSB to push 45nm procs. I think it achievables but I'm not sure if MAX1 get up to 500fsb? I didn't have a change to play around with Q9650 yet. It's also depend on the temps as well, my core load temps is around 60c with 21c ambient. That's 4.10ghz, 1.33Vcore, I'm probably can push it a little bit more but I like to keep my load temps is around 60c max, to leave some headroom for a hot summer days.

You can wait for Intel to releases the i7, then the Q9550 might drop prices, just keep an eye on it. But I do know Intel will EOL few versions of 45nm because some of this procs will hurt i7 sales. If you can get this chip less than $300USD is a good deal. Newegg is selling for $320 at the moment. You can check the eBay, you will have more chances to find it cheaper on there.

The reason I got Q9650 instead of Q9550 because I want more than 4ghz, I know I paid a little bit more for 1/2 of multiplier, about $130 more at the current price. And I'm know Max1 can handle Q9650 at 450fsb (4ghz) with no problem, I think Max1 getting flakies when you go pass 470-480fsb? That is why I said 3.8ghz is a sweet spot for Q9550 but I think you can push it a little bit more, perhaps 3.9ghz like you wanted. Now it's come down to temp vs. performance, will 100-200mhz make any noticable different to justify the temperature that you have to deal with?

oh...to answer you question,"will it worth.." I think so, if you reall want to upgrade the q6600, you know the q5500 is 10-20% faster than q6600 at stock speed (clock per clock).
