Default i7 965 with gigabyte ex58-ud5 needs help getting stable at 4

heya guys... anyone out there with the ex58-ud5 mobo and a 965???
well its been a process. first the fan on the freezone elite conked out so i needed a new one but it overheated the bearings on the pump so then it started to rattle. so this led me to the Coolit office where i met everyone and shook their hands and theyre all super nice. i also mentioned all my buddies at PureOC and they said hi. so they gave me a great deal on an upgrade to the boreas $580 total not bad and holy craps is it ever powerful!!! they said 2.5 times more than the freezone.

So now i have it oc'ed to 4.0 turbo ht
boreas set to 24 and idle holds at 60 percent with cpu temp at 35 average by Realtemp
playing COD5 at full settings and 1920x1600 boreas at 80%
The only think ive changed it the bclk and it seems like everything changes automatically for me.
    ok guys its question time....

    1. should i rely on the automatic changes or is there something i could do to get it more stable? (it has crashed a couple of times) (i can provide all the numbers)
    2. with this current set up with the antec 1200 and the boreas and the gtx280's do you think i am safe to oc to 4?
    3. is there anything else i should do to or have to be concerned about? i think im safe with the motherboard temps even though i dont know what they are ive heard that this set up doesnt run that hot and gigabyte ex58-ud5 is a high end board...

thanks for always being there for me guys!

You might wanna bump up that vcore a little more? What is your existing vcore? You probably need more to get it stable at 4ghz

Well its more of a temp issue than anything, have you tried running LinX on 10-20 loops? that would give you a very good gauge on how hot your load temps are ... but since its is a boreas i presume it is way superior to any watercooling out there.

Motherboard temps are the least i worry about to be honest, but if you really like to know what temps they are .. they are usually in regions of mid 30s and rarely go any further, i would be more concern about NB temps than mobo temps

thanks so much for the input bud!!!!
i just took pics of the bios and i ran 15 loops on the LinX and this is at 3.8 turbo...
cpu temp max 73 and 100% power on the boreas
note.... Linx crashed and restarted the computer twice at the 4.03 turbo settings
    here are the bios

3.84 ghz turbo ................4.03 ghz turbo
    160x24 ...........................168x24
    cu vcore 1.27500 .............. 1.27500
    qpi volt 1.175 .....................1.175
    ioh core 1.100..................... 1.100
    qpi link speed 5.76 ...................?
    uncore freq 3200 ......................?

so whatdoya think? the computer will run at 4.03 turbo but no stress tests... do you think 4 turbo is safe for a couple of years with the boreas? can we get it more stable?
thanks again for all yur input wish i could get yas a beer to say thanx

Jay Bump up that vcore a little to:
    vcore 1.35v .............. 1.35v

1.27 is too low to get 4.03 ghz stable
try it and let us know again..how it went

i tried at 1.3000 and at 1.2875 and no way either
now its at 4.03 with the auto 1.275 and its working but i know that it will crash if i run the Linx
right now its idle cpu temp of 42 at 4.03 ghz and my cooler is 55 %
im confused guys... how do i get this sucker to 4 or higher and stable...
Deton here is convinced that something is wrong with the cooler
Dr. Death thinks my hoses are too long and that its not mounted right maybe thats the problem.

Well i am think more so on the vcore, your chip isnt a D0 chip and you might need some where between 1.35+ to possibly 1.42 to get 4.0ghz stable

Each CPU is manufactured differently and some like more voltage to get it going, have you tried to disable HT (hyperthreading) on 1.35 vcore?

Each time i over an i7 i disable HT and make sure it gets stable on the desire settings before i turn on HT and work on vcore from there.

Try 1.40 vcore without HT and do a few LinX and
if it turns out good then turn on HT and see how it goes

ok i did what you said bud... here are my attempts witn Linx

    vcore = 1.4...................................1.425
    no hyperthreading............................no
    turbo on.........................................on
    4.03 = 168 x 24..............................same
    max temp = 72...............................same
    boreas = 100%..............................same
crash after 2 loops.........................two successful runs!!

ok now with the same vcore 1.425 i enabled the hyperthreading and turbo and crashed and restarted
ok now i upped it to vcore 1.4375 with hyperthreading and turbo and crashed and restarted

    question time guys
    1. how high should i keep going with the vcore?? i have selections in the bios and 1.55 - 1.59375 are pink numbers and then 1.6 - 1.6075 are red numbers!!! yikes thats scary stuff...i smell smoke!

    2. someone suggested upping the multiplier to 30?? will getting 4.0 with different mulipliers yeild different results?

thanks again for all the great input.. hope we can get this solved without frying somethin )

well... determined as i am ive been at it for 5 hours now and ive tried lots of different combos.
i started off by re reading detons overclocking guide 3 times
    then i tried techAnalyst's 965 settings of 134 x 30 trubo and ht and vcore 1.425 crash.... vcore 1.4375 crash...and 1.45 crash

then i went back to 4 ghz 168 x 24 turbo ht and tried with even higher vcore of 1.45 and crash temps 75 to 80

now im sitting at 3.91 turbo and ht and auto vcore still crashing with Linx

so im not giving up yet.. maybe theres a safety cutoff somewhere thats shutting it down. is it really necessary to pass this Linx test anyway? i mean when do i ever run at 100% ?
    ok thanks again guys...

I m not too sure about the Gigabyte boards but did u increase the QPI/DRAM volts as well?

You might wanna try bumping up IOC & IOH voltages a little to 1.3++ or so
I've read several articles of IOC/IOH being of some help but i do not have any first hand experience
but you might be one of them

Are you using the latest BIOS release? or still on the same BIOS ever since you purchased your board?

Try upping the QPI voltage ... I believe the minimum is 1.20v. I'm running 1.375v to get it working on 4Ghz.

    Jay;
Can you post your complete bios settings?
Hopefully we can spot something is not correct.

Edit: regarding to max Vcore, I wouldn't go over 1.45v for 24/7 use.

OK, I've been following your progress, and I'm thinking that maybe you could try to lower your BClock and go for a higher multiplier. I am also new to the i7 platform, but have been overclocking for several years now. Here is what I would try if I was in your situation:

    BClock: 154
    CPU Multi: 26
    QPI Multi: 18
    UnCore Multi: 20
    Memory Multi: 10

Spread Spectrum: Disabled (if your board supports it)

    VCore: 1.40
CPU PLL VCore: 1.9 (might need to play with this one a bit by lowering or raising it to gain stability, or just try leaving it on stock)
CPU VTT VCore: +300 mV (also might be listed as QPI/DRAM voltage)
    * Reguardless, this needs to be set to with around 0.45 mV of your VDimm voltage.
    QPI PLL VCore: 1.325

    HyperThreading: off
    Turbo: off

Once you try this, if it works for you, then try to enable Hyper Threading. If you turn on Turbo, its just going to take your Frequenccy higher, and might make it unstable again. I'd just worry with getting HT working, and leave the Turbo alone.

    Hope this helps

Are you talking about Linx OS or Linx stress test software?

Well you can be the geniue pig to try out Windows 7 for a year but don't expect all driver available for it. What do you plan to do when the expire day arrived?

You have no choice to buy the retail version of Windows 7 or uninstall it.
