Default Oveclocking Intel i7 930 – need advices.

    Hi,
I just joined this forum and I have reason for that – overclocking.
My new rig its build not for gaming but for 3D rendering. But I wuld like to overclock my CPU.

If any body can give some advices where I have to start – templates are more like Welkom, because I real nobb on that. Please, do not give any links.. because I read them all, but probably I to stupid for understand them properly. I need starting point. My RAM specks –

    OCZ DDR3 PC3-14400 Reaper Low-Voltage Triple Channel
    1800MHz DDR3
    CL 8-8-8-26(CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
Available in 6GB Triple Channel Optimized kits
    Reaper HPC Heatspreader
    Lifetime Warranty
    1.65 Volts
    240Pin DIMM
    Part Numbers
    6GB (3x2048M) T/C Kit PN - OCZ3RPR1800LV6GK

Thanks in advance and sorry for my English – I know that I am not very good on that.

What kind of cooling do you have. I reached 4.5Ghz stable. Think I could help. Actuall, post all your harware specs like I have under my name. You can access that in profile.(User CP)

Ok.. 1st of all, never take Ram voltage over 1.65V. Intel says this is the 1st thing that will quicky degredate the chip.

    Make sure Turbo is disabled...

Find how high your CPU can go on stock voltage. I7's like 21 x as the multi

Take your current multi setting and increase Bclock to get to 3Ghz. Run LinX 20 passes at 25000 problems and keep going until it fails. If you pass raise it to same multi and 3.1Ghz. Run LinX 20 passes and 25000 problems so forth and so on. See where your CPU maxes out on stock voltage. We will then take it from there. If you do not want to wait an hour for 20 passes at LinX. 10 passes will do for now.

Lets also lower memory to 1333Mhz for now. Stock auto volatge.

    Record max temps via coretemp.

    Doomas; welcome to PUREOC!
click on the 4Ghz club link under my signature, you will find some useful information about how to overclock core i7, also you will find some bios templates as well. Don't get discourage when you see a lot of i7 920, your 930 is the same chip as 920 but except your have 21x multi instead of 20x for 920 procs.

the other way to look at is your 930 will need lower blck to achive 4Ghz vs higher blck for the 920 procs.

    eg: 190 x 21 = 3999 (930) vs. 200 x 20 (920)

However, the voltage is very similar with 920 D0 version, pay attention to this, there are some C0 chip voltage samples in there as well. C0 requires higher voltage then D0 version.

Can I use for stressing CPU OCCT Perestoika, or Intel burning test, don’t like linux …
Anyway – start increase FSB without increasing voltage on CPU and just wait until is not boot, then start increase voltage – do I understand correctly ?
What about another settings – can I use settings from my template ?
My problem – I very precise person and before I start with overclocking I would like to know what to expect and how to correct any problems if they occur.
I cant stand up against my self and I will post some pictures from my rig. Sorry.

Intelburn and OCCT do not stress like LinX. LinX is just like Intelburn but better. 20 passes only takes an hour. You can "mini" stress with LinX at 10 passes while doing these runs. If you pass LinX at 20 passes and 25000 problems you are 98% stable. I have passed IntelBurn and OCCT to fail LinX. IMO it is the best with prime95. The only problem with prime95, it takes a long time. LinX can do in 1 hour what prime95 takes 4.

Your settings look fine. Just make sure turbo is disabled and I would disable your prefetching. I am not familiar with your prefetching as my bios does not have it. Lets see what max OC you can get with your settings with turbo disabled. When you find it will not pass, increase voltage on CPU a bit. Keep temps under 75 load for now.

    Nice Rig.. heres mine:

Old setup with 2 x 4890's crossfired. 1st pick is with 5870 watercooled:

If you need any software, I have a bunch on a sticky in our general software area. Here is LinX:

You could start with current cooling. We aren't doing anything drammatic.

Well I am not rushing anywhere – better do everything right from first time… I know one important think from my previous and main working rig with E8500 (OC to 4.0Ghz) that cooling is crucial on that kind of thinks.

Well, I finally was playing with oveclocking and this, what I achieved –

Max temperature on one of cores - 73. Room temperature is 30 C.....
If you see something wrong – please, advice me.
    CPU voltage - 1.26250

    CPU BATCH No: 3938B266

Should I try any higher overclock with same voltage ?, I quite happy with performance with current settings.
