Default CPU Speed Importance GPU Scrypt Mining

I want to hear from anyone familiar with mining. Is the CPU speed important at all. I see people using i7s, FX350s and even i3s. With the same GPU their Kh/s appears to be close to the same. So is it even worth spending $300 on a CPU when a $99 one can do the same workload on a mining rig?

What I'read and heard CPU doesn't have much influence on mining, its more GPU (AMD), then CPU. Its not my experience is just my conclusion of all the info on the internet.

I got verifaction from here and a few others. CPU power dont mean jack crap with mining. I just picked up a G3220 for $50 at Microcenter. Taking my i5 out of the mining rig and replacing with the g3220. Now i have the i5 free for reviews again.

I feel sure that others will confirm it but based on the fact that mining specialised rigs such as this:

are able to use pcie x1 connectors to hook cards to the motherboards, one has to assume that there is not a huge amount of communication between the two that requires cpu power.

I had no idea you could connect it to a 1x pcie. Time to go shopping!

I have been in PC stuff for a long time and I mess with a lot of new gear on here. It has been a long time since I have even considered what I am about to ask but I need clarification or verification before I try it. Dig it

Since I am NOT using Crossfire for Mining but have multiple cards in the system. Can I install different models into the same system and mine. Example. 2x 7950s 1x 280x and 1x 290? If there is limited spacing due to size of Cards I can use that 1x 16x cable or 16x 16x cable in a makeshift mounting fashion like the pic.

    What do you think?

my understanding is that you can do this. install the weakest card (for mining) first and run your screen from that then add the others maybe one at a time in order to let your OS see what's new. are you running windows or linux on this ?

Not sure if you need another screen or dummy plugs these days.

The spec of the flexi-riser may be important. I know that for Boinc it matters sometimes depending on project but with mining I just don't know

OK that's. That is what I was thinking too. I guess I will have to play with it and find out for sure. At least try and get the 7950s and 280x in the same rig. That would be pretty awesome if I can pull that one off. Install the 290 in another system.

I'll keep everyone updated. Hell I can try it tonight if I have the time to.

Oh yeah I'm running windows. The way AMD drivers work I think they would all need to be installed before running the driver app. Then again that is usually to make sure xfire works. Oh crap. Lol I'll play with it and report back lol

Sandy, CPU doesn't matter in mining, I am running a G3220 in one of my mining rigs...
Running my old AMD 6870s on a H87 Asrock board, gets lower hash rate than some of the higher end cards, but still works ok.
I am not a 24/7 miner, I just set one up to play around for a little bit.

I haven't mined in about 3 or 4 weeks, with all the work loads and pools getting so hard to work its been a little frustrating.
But you can probably get most AMD GPUs to work, I think I saw somewhere someone was running 1 270x and a 280x, though I never tried it myself I am sure someone has gotten it to work.

Alot of the guys are using 1x to x16 pci extension to attach like 6 graphic cards.

Over the last few weeks, mining has changed a lot with all the diff hardware and pools that have been popping up and also some of the new coins that are coming out that I have been reading about... there is A LOT of info to read on this subject, I for one, still don't understand everything 100%, but have been tinkering with it the last few months and reading on bitcoin forums.

Thanks for the additional confirmations bro!

Can't wait to see if it will work on not. If i can get at least 3 of them in the same box I'd be happy.
