    Default Re-installing OS on SSD

Since the birth of my SSD, I was seriously confused on the benchmarks reguarding the read/write speeds of my OCZ Vertex2 60G SSD. It seemed the speeds were subpar with manufacturer specs and other benchmarks. I followed Skyguys Performance tips on solid state drives (http://forums.pureoverclock.com/showthread.php?t=7691) but with no avail. I researched re-installing Windows 7 on the SSD and decided it was worth a shot. Here is what I learned.

Never re-install windows and use your windows cd and just reformat the drive. There is data left. I found a secure erase program that works through DOS that erases the drive and restores it to factory clean state. If you ever format a SSD, DO NOT DO A FULL FORMAT. IT WILL DEGRDATE THE DRIVE. Use quick format.

The program is called HDDerase: http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml

Simply make a bootable floppy, USB drive or bootable CD. Unzip the iso and copy the 4 files onto your desired method. Switch the boot device in your bios and satrt the computer. Make sure you switch the desired drive in DOS to the drive you are booting with. The command prompt will be /:A so if your drive is c you need to type /:c then type hdderase.exe and follow the instructions. it said It could take hours so DO NOT STOP HDDERASE IN THE MIDDLE. Your drive will be frozen.

Anyhow, after erasing the drive I reinstalled the OS. I chose AHCI and not IDE like Sky recommended and everything went smooth.

So Doctor, after the "format" how fast was the re-install speed compared to mechanical hdd? I will be buying a laptop soon, and I am thinking about going the SSD route for my primary drive.

Your going to notice a very big difference in everything you do, even your windows install will be a lot faster. I'm not sure what your budget is but if you can afford a 120GB or 200GB SSD go for it

Drdeath, since erasing the drive and reinstalling have you done any benchmarking on the drive? Does it perform any better and is it even close to the manufactuers specs or the performance listed in reviews here on the forum?

Both read and write was 265 Mb/sec read and write. It was faster but I made a mistake with a huge game download(7G). I had to reformat again as my 60G will be too filled. My speeds went down. I wonder if reformatting a second time hurt my baby...
