    Default Need Help installing SSD

    All,

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.
I have recently purchased a few items to upgrade my i3 system, like a Vertex 3 120GB SSD, Inno3D GTX 460 SE Green and Xonar DX. I am not a very serious gamer, hence, the choice of a decent card.

I need some guidance on how I should go about installing Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64-bit on the Vertex 3, as I've heard that I need to change the SATA settings to AHCI in BIOS, etc. Do I need to install Intel RST drivers? Firmware updates (there's one for Vertex 3 now)?

Some basics steps to go about achieving a smooth installation, and take advantage of the Vertex 3's speed, would help..

    Thanks.

    Hi DG,
Welcome to PureOC, yes go to your BIOS/UEFI and change SATA settings to AHCI and you will be good, make sure you connect it to a SATA 3 port on your motherboard to ensure you get maximum speed out of the drive. To check the drive's firmware you will probably need to connect it to another computer first and download the OCZ toolbox from there you are able to update the firmware. If you have already installed the OS into the drive and booting it as a primary drive you will not be able to update the firmware, there is a workaround to still update the firmware even though its your OS drive but you will encounter a BSOD as soon as the firmware is updated. Therefore i highly recommend you connect the vertex3 into another computer and check the firmware version with OCZ toolbox

Cool.. I will connect the vertex3 to my current system, and update firmware. I will then install Windows7, on the SSD...

Anything else I need to keep in mind...

Ok, problem solved. The AHCI setting in my ASUS MOBO, is under the Marvell Controller option. Once I changed that to AHCI, and toolbox has now updated the firmware to 2.11.

    Hi,

My MOBO has a Marvel Controller for the 2 SATA3 ports. The native support only offers SATA2 ports.
I now have a new problem, as ATTO does not show the kind of numbers that everyone's been getting here (Unable to attached an Image at the moment, but nowhere even close to 300, others are getting around 500s)

When I installed Windows on the SSD, the BIOS setting was like this:
Under Storage Section, the SATA Mode was IDE, and under the Marvel Controller Mode it was AHCI ode (Maybe that's the issue, don't know)
After installation, I went back and changed it to AHCI Mode at both places.

But, I still see a poor performance from the Vertex3. Any help would be great...

Also, now when I load OCZ Toolbox, it says that there are no OCZ products.. Why's that so?

Can u go to usercp and enable the check box and fill out ur system specs. I have no clue what board u r using

EDIT: u should not install ur os in IDE mode and then go back to bios and changing it to AHCI you will either BSOD or don't get the true performance speed, the AHCI setting should be enabled first then install win7 on it.

I believe there is a registry edit to tweak to update it on AhCi without reformatting ur drive all over again

    Hi,
I have now enabled my system specs.
And I have Secure Erased the drive now through the Linux bootable option.
Now, I have set everything in BIOS to AHCI mode, and have started installing Windows again.

I will let you know how it goes...

It`s not a bad rig. It should work like a charm with that solid drive. Let us know once it`s ready to rock

    Yeah, it's a good Rig, I agree.
But, I'm really frustrated with the Vertex 3 not delivering the speeds I was expecting. I've connected the SSD to the Marvel Controller 6Gb/s Port (as the native SATA Controller ports are 3Gb/s), and when I run ATTO, I get around 191MB/s Read and 124MB/s Write.

Infact, if I connect the SSD to the SATA2 3Gb/s port, I get 283MB/s Read and 267MB/s Write, which is pretty much what the SATA2 can deliver with this SSD.

But, I'm amazed why the speeds are so low with Marvel 6Gb/s controller?

Also, WEI rates the SSD as 7.4 (connected to Marvel Controller).. Dont know if others are getting better score.

Are there any Marvell Sata 3 drivers that needs to be installed? What about
Your bios? Is it the most up to date ?

You mentioned Atto speeds are low, Atto runs different file size test
From 4k all the way to large file sizes u should be looking at the bars
    Right at the bottom

Yes, I have the latest Marvell SATA3 driver installed. BIOS has the latest ROM.
I am looking at the bottom most line, in ATTO. I consistently get faster speeds from SATA2 ports, rather than the Marvell ports.
