Default How to convert FAT32 to NTFS without losing data

Well, a few days ago a friend asked me how he could copy some files, larger than 4 gb on his external drive that has FAT32 file system, instead of giving it a full format. Before he used HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.2.3 or did the operation from *device manager, but this time he was in a hurry and want it without losing any data.So here is the solution :
    > check the letter of the drive (H in most cases)
    > if you use Win Vista or 7 type cmd in the search bar and if you use Win XP, click on Run and then execute cmd
    > execute chkdsk h: /f (h is the letter of the drive you want to convert to ntfs. This is to check for errors and fixes.)

    > execute convert h: /fs:ntfs (h is again he letter of the drive), wait for the succesfull conversion message and then you can close the cmd propmt.

Be aware that you will lose all data if you want to go back on FAT 32, cause this trick only works for fat 32 to ntfs conversion and not viceversa.
I've used this method and i never lost data, but still if you have important files on the drive it`s recommended to do a back-up first.
Don't forget to use "Safely Remove Hardware" option.

Inspired from Convert FAT32 to NTFS Without Formatting or Losing Data, some time ago, but bookmarked it.

*device manager is a better option than installing other extra programs, but this is the way of enjoy ntfs file system option with data loss
    Follow the next steps :
Go to Device Manager > expand out Disk Drives > Select your USB drive listed> Right-click and go to Properties > select Policies tab > choose Optimize for performance and select OK.Now you have enabled NTFS option.

    Cheers..dacul

While on this topic, any way to do this from NTFS to exFAT? I have a 2TB external drive with about 200gb of data. I would like to hook that up to my tablet from time to time. My tablet will only read large external drives if formatted in exFAT. I have no drive that I can copy 200GB's too then copy it back once reformatted.

Thanks General. I may try to give this a go this weekend. The files on my external aren't crucial to have on my tablet, but since I got my tablet because it has full size USB connection for drives and accessories, I might as well try it.

Is ZorinOS by chance available as a torrent someplace? 1.4GB file, going at 65KB/sec. estimated time 7 hours 7 minutes.

Thanks. I have everything else downloaded, the zorin was the the bottleneck. Going to play around a bit tonight with a spare drive before I attack the one with all my data on it.

I'm stepping away from it for the night. I was able to use gparted to adjust the overall partition size. But when I went to format the newly created unallocated space, gparted has the exFAT option greyed out. And since my linux skills are little to start with, and very rusty on top of that, I just decided to give it a rest.

But thanks General for giving me a starting point.

Default Re: How to convert FAT32 to NTFS without losing data

From what I can gather by searching, it has something to do with it not being available running a live version of gparted, but it seems to work on installed versions. There is I guess a workaround for it, but my lack of linux skills are getting in the way.

I was able to format the test drive to exfat in win7, but thats as far as i've gotten so far. It'll be a spare time project I guess.

Not sure I want to go that hardcore for this. Until my desktop is built my only other setup is my laptop. I'm currently only running an 80GB SSD in here. It was a test to see If I could snap some life back into this thing. Dont really want to chop up the little space thats left for one operation. Now if I could use a combo of linux/windows utils to accomplish this, that would be cool. I'm in no rush really, so I'm going to play around with things over time.
