Default Need Help on detecting Hard disk via USB

Hi, I have an old external portable usb 2 hard drive and my pc is not detecting it, so I opened it up and hooked it inside my computer via sata and its working so I thought its the enclosure that's the problem but I bought a new enclosure and still the same result.. ive tried to reformat/delete the volume of the hard drive while its plugged inside my computer but still its not detecting it when I plug it in my enclosure. btw the the enclosure are both lighting up whenever I plug it in my pc. anyone know what might be the problem?

What is the size of the volume? Which OS are you running? Which chipset are the USB ports.

Maybe it isn't installing a driver for it. Are all of the drivers for your motherboard properly installed? How many other USB ports have you tried?

well I've tried all USB ports and yes I think theyre all installed properly since I've tried my flash drive with all the ports its just that HDD.. its not faulty since whenever I hook it inside directly to the board its working. my PC specs are in my profile just in case. PS no error's coming up its just its not detecting it.

it could also be a bad external case. The USB Circuit board my be bad within the unit itself..
at least from what I have read, thats what it sounds like to me.

He bought a new enclosure and is getting the same problem.

I'm honestly stumped on this one. It's super unlikely that both of the external enclosures are broken although it is a possibility. Do you have any other computer(s) you can try the external unit on?

    Try a different USB cable.
Try to connect it to another pc or laptop.
Connect it to the USB port. Restart your PC and Hit whatever button it is for 1 time boot options. See if the USB HDD is there. If it is then it is a Windows Problem.

hmm.. If that's the case, Yea I am not 100% sure... sounds like it can also be a compatibility issue with the enclosure and win8..

I guess a different USB cable and trying to see if it displays in the BIOS would rule that one out. Good thinking, Cyber.

Are there Jumpers on the HDD?

Is this a 3.5" drive? or 2.5" drive. I have some 2.5" drives at work that dont work right with some external usb adaptors. Connect the drive and put it up to your ear to see if it is spinning up. Listen to hear if it sounds like it is cycling. Spins then some clicks then nothing. Then spin then clicks ........ over and over.

3.5" drives need additionl power to work in a usb port. Some 2.5" drives also need additional power.

Have you looked in the Windows logs or in Disk management. Maybe its just having a problem with the volume label.

But event viewer should tell you where to begin.
