    Default Memorex CD Problem

    I run Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I have a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223L ATA Device [CD-ROM drive].
I am trying to use Memorex High Speed CD-RW. The only thing I get is that it has 0bytes Used and Free. I once got a reading of 537mb when the package says 700mb. The package says 8x-12x Write and Rewrite. As it stands Windows will NOT burn a file and will NOT Format the disk. My wife's computer tried to format the disk as a USB with many options, but it also failed. She has Windows 7 Home 64bit. My drive checks out okay, and other cd's will play and record.
Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with these disks?
    Thanks

Some drives have problems working with some brands of media. Go to the Mfg's website and see if they have a firmware update for your drive.
If so, that may enable it to read more media.

you just may have received a bad batch of media let me research your drive
and I will get back to you with some suggestions for you to try
Have you tried burning at half the rated speed of the media ?
try that and let me know

I stay away from Memorex and only use Verbatim media they are much more reliable and have a longer shelf life.

And Neil is spot on check and see if there is a firmware update for your drive link provided below

Samsung SH-S223L Firmware Downloads - Firmware HQFirmware HQ

I downloaded and installed the latest update. The only thing that happened is that any dealings with the drive have slowed
down. When I tried a burn I got a message the computer was not responding, although it finally gave me a message
to load a writeable disc. I am ready to junk the cd's and go back to SONY or Verbatim. I do very little with cd's other than
install from them. Flash Drives are SO much easier.
    Thanks for all suggestions.

Go to your motherboard maker's site and see if you have the latest driver for your hard drive controller.
Latest chipset driver is a good idea too.

I have checked all drivers using Windows 7 Professional 64.bit Control Center Device Manager. They all come back with the latest being 2006 drivers. I checked ASUS P6X58D-E board and I have the latest firmware. I downloaded SB-04 from a site
mentioned earlier. NO HELP. I will try and contact Samsung Monday to see if they have any ideas.

Verbatim Media is what I usually buy. (and sometimes Rosewill when I'm broke enough) I have three Plextor and an ASUS ~and~ a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223L burner that is the same as yours.
Verbatim always works well with all of them.

I had the drive installed April, 2010 when I had the system built. The drive does not get much use. The media is ~1 year.
It was originally bought to hold old videos. We have a converter. They did work with it.

I have not even thought about a re-install as it took the SB-04 update.
Question: Windows still says the driver is from 2006. The SB04 said it installed okay. Is this a driver that Windows should find? Is it a firmware update that goes directly to the device?

I went to Device Manager and in trying to update the driver I messed up the name of the device. The Hardware ID's under Detail show
    IDE\CdRomTSSTcorp_CDDVDW_SH-S223L________________SB04____

    TSSTcorp_CDDVDW_SH-S223L________________SB04____
    GenCdRom

The name used to show TSSTcorp_CDDVDW_SH-S223L

I keep thinking its the crappy media when was the last time you tried burning a DVD or a CD with this drive

you also mention in your first post your using Memorex CD rewrite disks they are the worse get some standard Verbatim writable disks instead.

    1. what are you trying to copy using a CD rewrite ?

    2. Do you have any other blank media such as DVD or CD that you can test with ?

    3. What program or programs are you using to transfer to disk ?

I was trying to copy a photo and then an MP3/MP4. I have found a Sony CD that I will try later today. I was using the
Windows 7 system, which seems confusing. It seems you tell it what you want to burn and then it checks it's list to find if
    there is something to burn.

Thanks I will give it a try. Does it analyze the CD as well as try and burn to it?

This is another good free program that everyone should have

    The Official ImgBurn Website

ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!
It has several 'Modes', each one for performing a different task:

    • Read - Read a disc to an image file
    • Build - Create an image file from files on your computer or network - or you can write the files directly to a disc
    • Write - Write an image file to a disc
    • Verify - Check a disc is 100% readable. Optionally, you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct
    • Discovery - Put your drive / media to the test! Used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing

If the drive doesn't sucessfully burn using this, start looking at replacing it.
Newegg, Micro Center, and other places have good burners for about $20.00 usually.
