Default setting up RAID with one drive full of data

i'm going to buy a new hdd this week and i want to set up raid over here.. the drive is identical to the one i have right now so everything's ok on that front.

i just wanted to ask about the data itself. a friend told me that i don't even have to reformat the drive and when the raid is configured it will automatically spread out the data accross both drives. now i'm pretty sceptical about this and i want to know for sure.. will i really be able to do this without reformatting?

my first drive is pretty much full at the moment and i would need to figure out a way to back up everything if the above isn't true..

hmmm i think nvidia raid does allow something like this, it's best to search for some previews of nforce5 to see what it says about raid features.

didn't find anything.. when setting up RAID i got a question "would you like to clear the data" and at first i said no.. ran winxp setup and it only was able to see unformatted disk. so no go.. anyway, after burning some 50 cds and dvds i've cleared the disk and set the RAID properly... works fine. no problems at least for now.
