Default New Hard Drives May Force XP Users to Upgrade to 7

    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/new...sers_upgrade_7

As a warning, itís not all that dire, but it is a wake-up call for Windows XP users--newer hardware just might make your XP life a bit less comfortable. In this case, hard drives coming out starting January 2011 will have a new formatting standard that will make them less compatible with XP, and will result in performance slowdowns.

Itís a change that makes sense, and is probably long overdue. The current formatting standard for hard drives is a legacy from floppy disks--formatting in blocks of 512 bytes. This makes for a lot of wasted hard drive space, when error correction and block gaps are tallied in. Given the amount of space that can be wasted on a 1TB drive with 512 byte blocks, itís time for a change.
I know a lot of people swear by XP for gaming. This may change their minds..

Does that means that when you get a 1tb hdd you will actually have 1tb space not like 900gb?

That's a smart move from WD to do that. Especially since there's not much time left until the new drives come out. That's true catering to the consumer.

People who swear by XP for gaming are living in the past. I challenge anyone who can visually tell the difference between 52.3 and 54.1 fps, for example for XP vs Win7. Show me someone who can tell the difference and I'll show you Superman. Time to move into the modern era people!
