Just Got and Installed now for some Tweaking! HyperX Predator Half-Height, Half-Length (HH-HL) 240GB PCI-Express 2.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SHPM2280P2H/240G

I run some test just to see how it performed actually my 2nd run on the drive after some Tweaks to Windows 7 this is my Results which Im very impressed! So far plan on doing a Fresh Install soon but not bad as opposed to my Crucial 240gb SSD which is not bad either but their is a profound difference in Performance! Im very glad I bought the Predator!

Two new toys. 1 256GB Samsung 950 Pro M2 (Microcenter Impulse Purchase...damn that place is dangerous), and a 2. A Genuine Molex ATX Pin Crimper...woot, I can make my own ATX cables (ebay is just as dangerous as Microcenter I guess).

Which to play with first???? I'm reluctant to install the SSD in my Z170 box, because it has the plague (Win10), but the Z87 doesn't have M.2....<sigh>....the AMD box might though...grrr, also Win10.

Maybe I need to get a PCIe NVME adapter for the Z87...wonder if I could boot from that...hmmmm...I'd try to multi-boot, but gack...it may have to wait until I get a newer Motherboard/CPU/RAM for DarkMatter...<sigh>. Maybe the Windows Plague will go on it yet...so sad.

Maybe some custom ATX cables then...lol

Congrats on 950 Pro Scott. I'm sure it can boot without the problem with PCIe adapter, just be sure to have all drivers for it (installation F6 and windows).

    Thanks!

Oh, I can boot Windows off it on the Z170, I just don't really want to blight it with Windows 10. It's the linux box I'm uncertain of. The Z87 doesn't support NVME directly, and I haven't spent enough time looking into the adapter cards to see if Z87 supports PCIE boot devices at all. My initial survey says no, which leaves either the Z170, or putting it into the AMD Machine I built a few months ago... On the other hand...that new Intel i7-6800K is sure appealing... perhaps the Linux box needs a new MB CPU combo....damn.

    doubts, doubts, are killing us...

Look Scott, I have X79 chip board (RIVBE), with no M.2 slot nor native NVMe support at all, I've bought Samsung 950 Pro, ASUS M.2 to PCIe adapter, then I downloaded all 950 Pro drivers, then I installed 950 Pro into empty PCIe slot on my board, Start the PC and check but BIOS did not see it (950 Pro), anyway I've started the W10 installation, had USB stick with F6 drivers ready, and voila the 950 Pro was found, recognized and installation passed smooth as a butter. Before I've tried to mod and flash the Board BIOS according to guides and tutorials from internet but had no success, so I've decided to go my way and was worth it. After that, I've tried to install W7 Pro in the same way, but with no success, looking all over the internet finally I've found the solution (modding/adding W7 Pro installation files with W10 installation files because W10 has native NVMe support), and W7Pro was installed with no problem.
Let me know if you are willing to try and I can upload the 950 Pro drivers and W7 Pro installation on Mega (you need a valid W7 Pro serial key) and I'll send you PM with link.

    Always look beyond the limits...

    Thanks Smiki,

I'm sorry, I wasn't being entirely clear with my issue! The problem is simply...I don't want to pollute the new SSD with ANY version of Windows.

The real serious question I had was...how do I get my Linux Mint box to boot off the NVMe device on a Z87 chipset? In the end your tips are absolutely correct, all I really need is an M.2 to PCIe adapter, and (in my case) a recent version of Linux (forgoing the Windows disk and the F6 driver magic...lol).

There's a great article here: https://delightlylinux.wordpress.com...-does-it-work/ That illustrates Mint compatibility with NVME...according to his benchmarks the drive is actually a bit faster on Linux Benchmarks than Windows Benchmarks...interesting, no? Even better though, a clean install of Linux will find and BOOT from the NVMe 950 Pro even on Z87...

Interestingly I did run into the W10/W7 driver hack while looking around...that's a neat trick.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to make it work though...good tips and you aimed me the right direction for sure...

I totally get where you are coming from there.

It is getting interesting on the Linux front with what I see as a move towards making it easier for mainstream users...

The Big news is there's a broad adoption in Linux distro world of the Snappy packaging system... the future. I think that Yum, RPM, Deb and such will wither and die when just one build is needed for many flavors of Linux. Shuttleworth (of Ubuntu/Canonical), said he was taken by surprise on this wide adoption. Think of a Snap kit for whatever nix platform you choose.

It is going to make distros bigger due to multiple versions of the same library/libraries on the system but that allows apps to be totally isolated from each other.... No more one app breaking another by overwriting lib version.

The future is here and it is not Windows
