    Default Leave it to Canada

What a bunch of idiots, the Canadian Government is pushing for the slaughter of close to 1/2 million baby seals, by clubbing then to death, and they are less than 3 months old!

    Yes I can!

It is a culture within Canada and a way of life for many. Those participating in this yearly event earn most of their yearly income doing this as their families and their families did before them.

It is a small portion of the country that do this not the majority. It is not endangering the species to the point of extinction. And I believe that it also helps with the fishing stocks therefore keeping some fisherman employed.

Would I participate in this? No!

But had I been raised in this culture as a way of life, dam straight I would be participating. It is called hunting. And as DooRules stated it is not as barbaric as it used to be or is still publicized by propoganda like you posted.

It is not my place to be telling people in other countries around the world that what theyhave been and possibly still are doing as a culture to survive is wrong because we do not do it in Canada.

Ok, here's my factual and pragmatic response:

The seal hunt is by "native" Canadians, not the rest of the population. It's a specific group, based on a specific cultural history and practice, and done in a controlled environment/manner predominantly by the Inuit population for food, fur (protection from the Arctic cold), and so forth. Further, the seal hunt is also designed to protect fishing stock for human consumption from an overpopulated animal population that threatens the ecosystem hierarchy. Lastly, the factual information presented in that "article" is minimal, contains no context or history, and is designed solely to solicit an emotional and reactionary response without any want for discourse or discovery of further fact.

    My philosophical response:

What's the difference between seal killing for a specific segment of the population while millions of baby cows are slaughtered every year? Are baby cows, poor little defenseless, innocent baby cows........more worthy of being killed and eaten as VEAL by all of us who love a good cutlet or chops on the grill?? Moreover, has anyone here been to a slaughterhouse to see how baby cows are actually killed and left to bleed out on the stall room floor? Or the little cute baby piglets that you all love to BBQ for baby back ribs?

Ahhh........it's different somehow when it's a domesticated farm animal, but not so much for animals that actually live in the wild?

Methinks this is the pot calling the kettle black.

    Good points, Jake.

Here in Washington, Native Americans are permitted to hunt whales as part of their heritage. And yes, I've seen the way cows are slaughtered. It's gruesome, but I'll keep eating steak just as I'm sure the Inuits will keep eating seal. Maybe I should give seal meat a try. Might be yummy.

I understand the food thing but baby seal? I hunt and regulations to control population DO NOT INCLUDE baby animals where I come from.

Jake, did you read the article ? this had nothing to do with food, the government wanted to increase the sale of seal products, if they have to do this they should go after the adults, not baby seals less than 3 months old.
