Garmin has had a few updates on there new unit, The one I have I bought about 1 year ago. I've updated the map and works like a charm.
Also it has speech and text. I think I paid like $125 for it. it was a Slickdeals item when i got it..
I've also used MIO - Stay far far away from them. I've had 2 units already go bad due to battery. They tend to pop, I had one battery pop and another one puffed up and broke my LCD. One was under warranty which MIO replaced, Other one was out of warranty which I just trashed.
Tom Tom is good. I use one of those in our company car. However no map upgrade available so it doesn't have some of the newer areas we travel too.
I've had the best luck with Garmin so far, Even my In dash kenwood unit that uses Garmin is update able via USB cable.

Garmin is a great choice Stan. I have 2, my wife uses the older StreetPilot 2730 and I use the same one Neil has. Both have lifetime map updates. I like the StreetPilot 2730 better but it is much bulkier. Good luck.

I find that I like leaving the voice turned off, and just checking my miles to go 'till my next turn. I enjoy paying a little bit of attention to it while I drive.
This ~is~ a very civilized way to go places that you've never been before.
I've found that you can find places on Google Maps and then ~send~ them to the Garmin's storage VIA the USB cable with your own names on them for look-up later on.
I put a 2GB Kingston Micro SD card in mine for a little extra storage. The Garmin picked up on that right away and started using it.
The ~car~ that I'm using on the display is a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter.

Very True,
However In California, Although my iphone has all of that plus more like you said, If we are caught even holding our phone's while driving.. its a TICKET. Even if we aren't using it.. It's their words against ours..
I rather use a GPS and just not risk it.. lolz.
Not sure how other states are with driving while using the phone.
