Default Unauthorized unlocking of smartphones becomes illegal Saturday

The Librarian of Congress determined in October of last year that certain actions involving mobile phones were illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The rules were revised to state that while it is legal to jailbreak smartphones, it is illegal to jailbreak tablets and illegal to unlock phones without permission from your wireless provider. A 90-day window was put in place that allowed consumers to purchase a phone and unlock it, however that window closes on January 26th, TechNewsDaily noted.

If you find that rule rediculous then please take the time and fill out the online petition. (link above) Needs 100k signatures before February 23rd.

This has always been a fun and free hobby with a great community that shouldn't be subjected to potential lawsuits or criminal charges for doing something that has been allowed for years. To hell with all of the carriers. I'm going to keep on unlocking and the Library of Congress can suck my salted chocolate balls!

What a joke like that's going to stop it LMFAO!

I have unlocked and cleaned off phones I bought for years I give them away to people in need
I don't want to give them away with anything on them
or make it impossible for them to use it.

No its not going to stop people but it still shouldnt be illegal in the first place. Nobody should have to worry about silly crap like this for a phone they purchased. Its insane!

I think you are confused. I am talking about sim unlocking, something that not every phone can do with sw hacks and most of those arent even reliable. There are some phones that are very difficult as far as bootloader unlocking goes. I know, because I have owned some of them, which is why I dont buy Motorola anymore. I am however surprised that I didnt see this mentioned on XDA.

Not confused at all. I have unlocked 5 different phones in the last few weeks. Sony, HTC, Samsung and an LG. Either bypassed or hacked boot loader. Sim unlocked is also known as S-off. Sony is the hardest out of all of them for a SW unlock but very possible. True some Motorola phones are harder, the Pre Google buyout models. Since the buyout the boot loaders are not strapped down as tight. For Android based phones its pretty reliable. Once its unlocked it unlocked until you decide to lock it back for warranty claims.

Either way. Its a fun hobby and should be a free hobby. I shouldn't have to ask for permission or pay anyone to unlock if I don't want to.

I have had my own phones relock on me, which is a huge pain in the ass, because then you need to look up the whole procedure again. Unlock by codes is more reliable and it also doesnt void your warranty in any way, which imo is worth the 15 dollars.
