Default Scientists claim there is no afterlife

Near-Death Experiences May Not Be Evidence Of An Afterlife, Rather A Surge In Brain Activity

    http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013...n_3747673.html

Near-death experiences (NDEs) have been described by many as proof of the afterlife - intense white light, hallucinations of dead loved ones talking to them, angels and so on. Now, a slightly less romantic but more scientifically sound explanation has emerged - the brain experiences a surge of activity shortly before death.

The changes, which were observed in rats may go a long way to explaining the after effects. Even after the animals' hearts stopped beating and no blood was reaching their brains, they appeared to show signs of conscious perception, said the scientists.

The study is the first to take a systematic look at the neurophysiological state of the dying brain after a cardiac arrest.

    brain scan

It suggests something happens at the brink of death that pushes the conscious brain to a high level of arousal, potentially triggering the visions and sensations associated with NDEs.

As many as a fifth of people who survive cardiac arrests report having had an other-worldly experience while being "clinically" dead.

Typically NDEs involve travelling through a tunnel towards an intense light, being separated from the body, encountering long-departed loved ones or angels and undergoing some kind of judgment of "life review".

Some emerge from NDEs as transformed individuals with a completely altered outlook on life, or a new belief in religion.

But many scientists believe near-death-experiences are nothing more than hallucinations induced by the effect of the brain shutting down.

The new research involved recording the electrical nerve impulses of anaesthetised rats whose hearts were artificially stopped. Within 30 seconds after suffering a cardiac arrest, all the animals displayed a short-lived surge of widespread, highly synchronised brain activity.

"We were surprised by the high levels of activity," said Dr George Mashour, one of the US researchers from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

"In fact, at near-death many known electrical signatures of consciousness exceeded levels found in the waking state, suggesting that the brain is capable of well-organised electrical activity during the early stage of clinical death."

The findings are reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Previously it was assumed that brain activity ceases when the heart stops.

"This study tells us that reduction of oxygen or both oxygen and glucose during cardiac arrest can stimulate brain activity that is characteristic of conscious processing," said lead scientist Dr Jimo Borjigin, also from the University of Michigan.

"It also provides the first scientific framework for the near-death experiences reported by many cardiac arrest survivors."
I believe there is. People all over the world and who worship different religions have the same type of near death experiences.. nah, that's no freak brain hallucination.

Checking out a few videos on YouTube is quite telling.. there are two types of near death experiences.. one is the bright light(feeling of love and warmth) the other is darkness(feeling of over overwhelming dread) voices cry out at you in the darkness telling you to go back!

This Muslim turn to Christianity after having his..

Science is based on fact; religion / afterlife is based on pure faith regardless of fact. So of course scientists will always dispute religious beliefs. One simple way to look at things is this - on your deathbed, would you rather have hopes of something after, or the scary realization that it's all over? Scientist tombstone: "All dressed up with no place to go".

I'm not one to go to any type of church, but I do believe there is an afterlife. Surely your soul/personality can't just vanish after death?

"But it is not a fact that it doesn't exist."

But it is [also] not a fact that the One-Eyed-One-Horned-Flying-Purple-People-Eater doesn't exist, either. Meaning, lack of proof for or against something is generally not a sound basis for claiming or disclaiming anything at all ... rather that is where personal beliefs / faith come into play, which really can't be meaningfully challenged.

Lets just resort to the Copenhagen interpretation and say that it both exists and doesn't exist at the same time lol

That's a really interesting study. They did not claim there was no afterlife, they simply concluded the conditions the brain experiences post cardiac arrest.

Whether you 'believe' that an after life exists or does not is all up to you whether its a gut instinct or not. Don't "not believe" in scientific findings, by all means refute them through evidence and seek to falsify another theory, that's how science advances. A lot of practices and dogmas, that I take for granted given my background, people really don't understand. Personal experience and especially those encountered in near death experiences would naturally be prone to hallucinations. As the study says, you experience a surge of neurochemical and electrical discharges whilst in that state, very easily stimulating dendrites associated with various stored memories in your hippocampus. This would naturally bring numerous memories to the surface.. this is no reason to suggest that there is an afterlife.. I don't see how that conclusion was ever formed..

Your body is a very complicated and amazing biochemical machine. Everything you feel, see, taste.. etc is the accumulation of millions of years of evolution from the very first common ancestor to the Earth's initial chemistry. If you ever have the chance to review literature relating to natural selection and the biochemical origins of this earth, do so, it will open your eyes.

I could go on for days.. but back to overclocking :P pm if you want to talk about science or evolution... if you're genuinely interested..

Heard some stories about a dude with an ouija board and a friend from hell. Don't think it's true, but if it is, you wouldn't want to be there lol
He explained that you would be thrown into a lake of lava for a few years (time goed faster there), and you would get raped every now and then. There is beer though (creation of the devil).
