Default XaaS, advice in getting started

    Hey Guys,

I might be running across an opportunity to manage a server set up with my ISP to start offering certain cloud services. While I have a pretty good grasp on the hardware side of things, my primary experience lies with Windows Server and I've obviously never started anything this big before. Essentially, our town is getting Fiber laid out to the whole town and the owner of the ISP for the homes wants to start some additional services due to the amount of bandwidth we're going to have.

I mentioned XaaS since I had learned about it with my certifications, but if any of you could give me some advice as to where to look so I can begin learning more, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm already googling things to figure out what I can on my own. As always, thanks for the support and I hope to hear some great advice.

It's fiber and I may get the position of part time web-server manager for our area. I should add, if anyone knows some good places to start learning web-design, ie. programs that start you out without having to know HTML off the bat, that would be a huge start. Also, I would love recommendations on server hardware from a performance standpoint. Xeon vs, Opteron (pretty sure Xeon wins) and how many cores/clockspeed should I be looking at for possible other services, virtualization, etc. Also, if I was going to look into server companies, which ones are the best. I doubt a company can save money over a custom built one, but my experience with Dell on servers has been that their support is pretty good.

Also, I'm already researching this on my own, I just really value your guys opinions which is why I posted the thread.

    Josh,

I would STRONGLY suggest not taking this approach. Goto W3Schools Online Web Tutorials and learn some HTML. Seriously. It's trivially easy to learn, and it is the foundation of all Web Design.

After you learn the Basics then adding on Javascript, PHP, Perl, Ruby, etc, etc becomes a task oriented function.

To be fair, that's just my .02 though.

Server selection is a black art really. There are vast areas of server selection that have a great deal to do with reliability (the number of 9's uptime you need), security, load distribution, etc that you'll need advice from someone with real world experience to help you with. Cores vs RAM vs transactions, etc. Virtualization is a hugely complex area as well. Many of the things that you or I take for granted with our personal machines, or even small business servers or home media servers are vastly different when applied to high traffic web or application servers.

I wish I was in a position to give you some help, but I know enough to know I don't even begin to know enough!

    Good Luck Sir!

    S

You know what, I keep thinking that learning HTML is going to be rough, but I keep forgetting, once I start using it to actually design a page. It will quickly become easy to me.

It's sort of like video editing. At first VSDC was incredibly daunting and I had no idea where to even start. Now I can throw timelines, effects, clips etc. without hardly thinking about it, but it wasn't until I hashed through my first video that it really started making sense to me.

Yup. And I promise you, Video editing is definitely harder than HTML!

In the end, for simple things you'll find that a text editor and a little HTML knowledge will be easier and quicker than any "Web Design" tool ever invented. Further, you'll have the knowledge to know when DreamWeaver or Frontpage, or whatever Web Design Interface these crazy kids are using these days, writes BAD Code, and when you fix it with your text editor, you'll feel like a Hero!

    LOL

Now I just wait for Kenny to chime in on the server parts. I'm pretty sure he has experience with building servers for companies.
