Don't even get me started. The Elder Scrolls are very dear to me. Just a pity they died after Daggerfall.

    ANYWAYS

SUPER EXCITED, the fourth was incredibly disappointing (although not enough even for me NOT to sink 400+ hours into, however U_U) because of the buggy engine, repeat environments and enemy scaling (WTF WERE THEY THINKING?!?) When they first announced this game, and said it was built on the FO3 engine, which is just a retooled Oblivion engine, which is just the goddamn Gamebryo engine I was pretty let down, but after hearing it's built on a new engine, my faith is renewed!

The best single player rpg of all time. man i love these games. I wish more rpgs would let you make decisions that can end your story line by killing a main character. The only way they could make it better is destructible environments. I wouldn't mine being able to wack down a tree or shoot an arrow through a glass window.

    I'll tell you this much.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, convinced me to buy a PC and get back into computing. I had spent a month playing Daggerfall on a friend's PC, in the back room of a video store. It blew me away. So much freedom, non-linearity, unseen in my SNES and PSX titles. Decided it was time to get serious about computers again.

Great game. A game with balls. A "Mature" game before that label was invented. Bethesda didn't have anything to prove, they made the game they wanted to make. And it rocked. Great randomization algorithms made sure that no two dungeons were alike. And there were thousands of dungeons. Great dialogues. The inclusion of books, in a game, that you could read at your leisure. Level progression through the use and practice of skills. Realistic burglary (meaning you could actually break down doors with your weapons, or use spells). Oh, and tits. Can't forget pixel nudity back then. Random encounters. No map edges; you could walk, run, ride, or fly forever, and the game would simply manufacture terrain and enemies. Diseases abounded.

A few years after Daggerfall, news of Morrowind surfaced. Of course I haunted Bethesda's boards. Joined a community called Euro-Morrowind, took the name "Moraelyn", after a character in one of Daggerfall's books. Met lots of great people. Got physical with one. Stayed there until the site's death a few years later.

Morrowind of course, was a huge disappointment after Daggerfall. Everything was simplified. Sterilized. Homogenized. Bethesda was looking for a bigger audience, and that audience included the Xbox kiddies. That isn't to say the editor, the TESCS, wasn't revolutionary. It was. Yet the game blew chunks. Dumbed down, short, and trapped inside an invisible, dark black box. I can't help but deduce that voice acting played a sad, but necessary hand in its failing. Nobody is going to shell out the money for a thousand hours of voice acting.

Oblivion came. Even worse. Now a third console entered the scene. Controls went to ****; skills disappeared; cell loading changed; ability to levitate was taken away; reminders at every map edge that you were stuck inside a finite space, playing a game. Most of these choices were made because of the consoles younger attention-deficient demographics, limited hardware capabilities, and user interface.

Bethesda's motto has become, "Make it pretty, make it short". Now I hear people tell me Oblivion was so good. Or so much better than Morrowind. But they're virgins. They don't have a frame of reference. Did they play Arena, Daggerfall, Redguard, Battlespire? They tout only the most recent titles like they're a great TES legacy, when they're in fact, the worst in the series. Well okay, Arena wasn't very good. And Redguard was more a spin-off. But still; they don't even know these games exist. Bloody noobs.

I've got a tally of about 2,000 hours in Daggerfall. 500 in Morrowind. And maybe 200 in Oblivion. Skyrim? I shudder to think. 50? 75? If Fallout: New Vegas is any indicator, Bethesda need another studio to come in and take the franchise back to basics for them. Back to playability. Back to credibility.

I could end this subtle diatribe now, but no; two other little tidbits for you:
#1) My avatar is a tree sprite stolen directly from the files of Daggerfall.
#2) My name is Moraelyn. I had it legally changed before getting married. I didn't want to carry my father's name with me into a new life, and I had been using it online for so long, that, hmm... why not. You'll find it in Daggerfall's "King Edward" series of books. Dark Elf. I'm technically drow, but dark elf is close enough.

34 year-old from Rhode Island. Good god, what a body. She liked exercising and gaming. Loved to roleplay. She was a geek's wet dream. That was about six months of pure fun, then she hit a wall of depression and that was that. Few months later she was with someone else. Meh.

That's all the details you'll get on that.
