    Default 30% of gamers don’t pay for games

    Yahoo;

    New research has revealed that around a third of all gamers don’t pay for the games they’re playing.

    Boffins from video game tracking firm Newzoo found that all gaming platforms – whether they be PC, console, handheld or mobile – support an audience of approximately 30% that simply aren’t forking out for their gaming pleasures. Instead they’re enjoying the numerous cost-free online offerings available – Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 demos, games such as ‘Treasure Isle’ or ‘Bejeweled Blitz’ on Facebook, ‘Lite’ versions of iPhone Apps and so on.

    So If you play Farmville/Treasue Isle/Mafia Wars/Bejeweled on Facebook, that means you don't buy games....

    My steam account says differently.

    I either buy games (retail only! No digi crap.) or pay subscription services for MMOs. Don't think I've played a free game since... eh... Was Tetris free? It's been so long I can't remember.

    There's an article in this month's WIRED magazine talking about piracy in the gaming industry. It says that in 2009, Modern Warfare 2 sold about 290,000 copies; however it was illegally downloaded an estimated 4.1 MILLION times! This is an extreme example, but a relevant one nonetheless.
    In my experience, there's usually a lot less hassle in the long run to just BUY the game; especially if there's any kind of online updates or downloadable content. Hacked copies (A) rarely have full functionality, ( can contain viruses, and (C) glitch, crash, or just plain don't work. In most cases, I'd rather just shell out the cash.

    What's your reasoning for the strong feelings?

    Preservation, perdurance, consanguinity, respect.

    I am comforted by having the physical materials. I don't rely on the internet or digital lifespan of net-based services. I enjoy the artwork and scripture that comes with a physical edition. In older games, I greatly value having CD audio I can pop into any player and listen to; in fact I've purchased many a title simply for its score (see Paul Anthony Romero, Guido Henkel, Barry Leitch).

    Someone put time and effort into designing the retail product. Digital copy are like CliffNotes to the experience of the real thing.
