Default The itch. Random thoughts on a new build.

I've been itching to start a new build for a couple of months now. You all know how it goes... A lust for fresh tech. Thing is, I can't decide between 1155, or 2011.

    - 1155 is available, affordable, and fast. But it lacks PCI-e lanes and offers only dual-channel ram options.
    - 2011 (Sandy Bridge-EN) isn't due until Q3 this year. It will be expensive, but will have my PCI-e lanes, sport quad-channel ram, and also come in hexa- and octo-core flavors.

My indecision doesn't mean that I can't outline the rest of the components though. And this build will be SFF. I've done gigantic; want to try something more subtle. Leaning towards mATX, but keeping an eye on ITX too, just in case. With ITX I'd have to give up SLI, unless I went with a one-card dual-GPU solution (which unfortunately also adds compatibility issues to the equation). And I do like my SLI, damn it.

Looking at 800 watts for an 1155 build, or 1kw for 2011. Antec? Corsair?

GPU - GTX 560 SLI. A responsible budget choice. This of course depends on whether or not its SLI scaling is anything like the 460, which is a monster at scaling. At first glance it appears as little more than a rebadge, but I'm waiting for the first reviews to roll in (Jake).

2 SSDs, raid 0. Probably Crucial's new C400s. I've been happy with their predecessor. Or a RevoDrive, if they get TRIM working somehow.

2 1TB drives, raid 1. Why opt for 2TB drives? My pirating days are long gone and it takes me forever to fill drives now.

Case - Lian Li PC-A05. Because I like it. Better get it now, too, since they're dying up. I regret not getting my hands on an NZXT Rogue before they died out, don't want to make that mistake again. I'm also watching Cubitech too, though, hoping they squeeze an mATX between their ITX and mid-tower aluminum Tank series models.

More thoughts later; out of time.

I can't really comment too much, as I am thinking of waiting until 2011 comes out, hopefully with light-peak.

As far as the case goes, if you really like the case, then get it as quickly as you can. I made that mistake by not picking up an NZXT Panzerbox, and now they are all but impossible to find. Now I'm only wishing that I could actually afford a case by Windy PC, but they are about $750 USD stock, without a paint job, or any extras.

-CPU. Go with both 1155 and 2011.

-GPU. I will be getting GTX 560's for review but nothing mentioned yet. Seriously, this is not NDA stuff. Have no clue when they'll release

-PSU. Antec or Corsair (aka Seasonic). Both fantastic.

-SSD. Vertex 3 is coming. Revo X2 is so stinking fast, who cares about TRIM?

-Light Peak. Fuhgettabout it for 2011.

I believe light peak will be an add on PCIe card. I would say wait Monger. You are into pure performance and the next release will be better IMO(Much).

Hey, a guy can dream can't he?

Everything that I've been reading was saying that Mac was supposed to be getting it around the beginning of this year, so I was assuming that the PC market would hopefully be getting Light-peak around Q3 or Q4 of this year.

I know. I have a crush on Windy's cousin, Abee. Importing one is a costly venture though. But damn, a 420 and a 360 in the floor... that's some decent rad space.

My plan with the PC-A05 is a 360 rad in the roof for the GPUs, 200mm rad in floor (rear) for the CPU. Aquaero in first drive slot, since it's only 30mm deep. Possibly that Silverstone DVDRW and USB cabinet from Kipper's review in the second slot. Or just a DVDRW.

    Ordered the case yesterday.

2011 is backwards compatible with 1366 coolers, so my silver-based RRT nickel-plated AC Kryos won't be wasted. May or may not use a reservoir.

Antec or Cooler Master PSU. Now that I know Corsair's aren't reliable.

Well our chips came in yesterday, if you look around you may be able to find a good deal like I did and pick them up for under $300. Jeremy, you should have said something, I just dropped off the Panzerbox at Salvation Army, I had to make room in here, I would have gladly given it to you.

Earth, Skys right, build both and give the 1155 to your wife once the 2011 comes out, that way everyone will be happy. Jeremy when you have a chance email me I want to talk to you about something. By the way I managed to get Pure OC a X2 Revo Drive for review, we will be finding out just how fast this drive really is!

Look who you're speaking too. Though I prefer the term "sophisticated" over "elitist".

I just don't have any desire for products within the realm of mundanity. I want the oddities; the rare and unconventional. Not necessarily the most expensive, let's be realistic, but some quality that renders the item unique.
