    As we can see from the above picture, AMD's "Bulldozer" core will feature two integer clusters per core - this will provide an increase in multithreading capabilities at the cost of 5% extra die space. Each cluster is fed from the instruction decoder, which chooses which path the instructions will take: they can go to the FPU, or one of the integer clusters. Each of the clusters has it's own L1 data cache to provide data locality since each of these clusters will be exposed as a processor to the OS - but they will both share the FPUs.
    AMD has not opted to implement simultaneous multithreading(like HyperThreading, called SMT) into the the new design, but has instead opted to provide dedicated execution hardware. This move will obviously yield a bigger performance increase than the one that would be possible with SMT. AMD is targeting an 80% improvement in integer performance per core:

    AMD is referring to the number of integer cores on a processor when it counts cores. So a quad-core Zambezi is made up of four integer cores, or two Bulldozer modules. An eight-core would be four Bulldozer modules.

    The initial family of AMD's FX-series microprocessors based on Bulldozer micro-architecture will include four models with eight, six or four cores and 95W or 125W thermal design power (TDP).
    The first breed of AMD FX8000, FX6000 and FX4000 currently known under Zambezi code-name will completely support all the advantages that the Bulldozer micro-architecture is supposed to bring, including new Flex FP floating point processing unit. The new chips in maximum eight-core configurations are projected - by AMD's internal documents - to offer roughly 50% performance improvement over Phenom II-series microprocessors in multimedia applications.


    The primary family of AMD FX-series central processing units (CPUs) will feature two eight-core models, one six-core flavour as well as a quad-core version. The chips will support dual-channel DDR3 1866MHz memory, will support Turbo Core dynamic acceleration technology and will come in AM3+ form-factor and will have 125W and 95W TDP. The second "wave" of Bulldozer chips will also include four microprocessors and will improve performance of the initial breed of CPUs.

Based on estimations, frequencies of such chips may be as high as 3.50GHz. What should be noted is that modern CPUs can include units that work at different clock-speeds and the highest one will hardly determine actual performance.
    Four chips are not a large number and they will hardly be able to properly compete against rather huge Intel Core i7-series microprocessors, which includes quad-core and six-core offerings. But this - initial offering by AMD - may not be the "army" to attack Intel, but rather than a lineup to show what AMD is capable of: creation of a competitive high-end microprocessor. The second breed of Bulldozer-based chips due in Q4 is supposed to really improve AMD's positions on the market of expensive central processing units. By the end of the year AMD, based on a document seen by X-bit labs, expects approximately 10% of its CPUs to be FX-series in AM3+ form-factor.
    AMD Orochi design is the company's next-generation processor for high-end desktop (Zambezi) and server (Valencia) markets. The chip will feature eight processing engines, but since it is based on Bulldozer micro-architecture, those cores will be packed into four modules. Every module which will have two independent integer cores (that will share fetch, decode and L2 functionality) with dedicated schedulers, one "Flex FP" floating point unit with two 128-bit FMAC pipes with one FP scheduler. The chip will have shared L3 cache, new dual-channel DDR3 memory controller and will use HyperTransport 3.1 bus. The Zambezi chips will use new AM3+ form-factor and will require brand new platforms.
    The Sunnyvale, California-based chip designer plans to introduce AMD 900-series chipsets compatible with Zambezi processors in Q2 2011. The Bulldozer processors, Radeon HD 6000 "Northern Islands" discrete graphics cards and AMD 900-series core-logic sets will power AMD's next-generation enthusiast-class platform code-named Scorpius.
    AMD did not comment on the news-story.

    AMD Bulldozer can do 1GHz TurboCore

    With Bulldozer architecture, AMD will also launch next version of TurboCore technology. According to document, Bulldozer FX processors can do 1GHz Turbo Core with half cores.

    the illustration is confusing
    does this mean half of my cores shut off if i am doing full boost?

    or just that half of the cores doing OC are able to give another 50%?
    if so it seems we should be able to unlock all core to 100% and throw a high end refrigeration to it

    is there such a thing as an alcohol based cooling system?

    not really. you can do water cooling, which is distilled water and some anti-biological/corrosion additives. if you really want to use alcohol, you'd need to use dry ice, and just use alcohol as the liquid. it'd have to be VERY high % alcohol. even when i used 91%, it sometimes got a bit thick.

    also, that means that with half of your cores disabled through power gating, you would see the remaining cores rise 1ghz bar voltage/temperature throttles.

    on single threaded application, that would be pretty sweet.

    Turbo core is going to have I think what they call a smart function. Not all chips will overclock "That" high. AMD will test the chips with their stress test which makes Prime95 look like a toy. Softeare stress tests do not stress the processor as hard as AMD. The chip is supposed to have a max overclock and the smart function will raise the clock according to the need. When the chip gets unstable or reaches max TJ, the smart function downclocks it.

    The micro architecture of BD allows the OS to execute the assignment to one core thus having other cores idle makes Bulldozer much more efficient unlike Intel that does not execute the assignment to one core but all the cores.
