Default User complaints of Running slow and Shutting off.

So this Pc was brought to me for repair. The end user complains of it running really slow and then randomly shutting off. I gave them a few suggestions but They went ahead and just dropped it off for me to deal with.
I powered on the unit and sure enough none of the fans were spinning inside the case. The psu fan sounds like there is something stuck inside it. I looked further into the fans not spinning and this is what I found.

Top Exhaust fan. The side Exhaust looks the same.

The CPU heat sink fan After I removed it.

Removed the heat sink fan. WTF is that? A kitten?

Nobody thinks about cleaning them until they go belly-up.

Believe it or not, I have seen them far worse, but that one ~is~ nasty.
The PSU is probably just as bad inside.
Show them these pics and then set up a schedule to clean it every 6-8 months.

Nasty for sure but like you I've seen far worse. Maybe a sticky pic thread for all the dust bombs we see would be a grin.

it made me laugh. No sh*t its cutting off and running slow! I have already talked to them about cleaning it often. Even more so if you have pets. I see they didnt listen. I cant even clean this unit at home its so nasty. Taking it to work so i can use the blow out booth.

I have seen worse too. Ill take some pictures of some of the units we receive at work. You will want to wear a hazmat suit before you touch it. lol

I would love that thread! great Idea! I see some nasty crap all the time. Laptops, desktops, servers, and POS equipment. You havent seen anything until you have a pc with a quarter inch of sticky soda on the bottom with massive fur balls! or a gecko stuck to the mainboard! lol

"I have already talked to them about cleaning it often"

Charge them enough to give them religion about it.

Had someone bring me a box that they said just 'popped' and went blank.
I opened it and there was a Mouse living in the case. It climbed in and out through a missing expansion slot cover.
Mr. Mouse's mistake was pissing on the video card one time too many. He was dead on top of it. The whole case stunk like Mouse Pee and Turds.
    It was everywhere inside.
I wondered why they didn't notice the smell, and then realized that their whole house must be like that.
I threw the whole thing in my dumpster after I built a new PC for them. I didn't even try to save the data on it.
    It was a biological hazard.

I have an 8+ yead-old dell that was used daily for a solid 4-6 years and it isn't nearly that bad, looks practically new in comparison. Never cleaned it and besides the PSU there is only one fan in the entire system even though it uses a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition CPU

WOW I had one that was full of cobwebs and spiders, the kind you see in horror movies, but never anything that extreme.

OMG. I'm lazy about cleaning my system and I do it at least every 6 weeks. If you make cleaning them a regular habit, it doesn't take that long to blow the dust out and button them back up for daily use.

Yes it is a hazard. We dont work on things like that. We bag them up and send them back!

One of the nastiest things that happened to me was I was taking a part a laptop. When I lifted the palm rest bed bugs where crawling in it. I grabbed the bottle of 100% alcohol and hosed everything in sight. Tossed it in a bag then sat it outside! I sprayed so much alcohol people in the front office could smell it. lol Killed every thing and made a few people a little sick. lol oh well! Not playing with bed bugs.
