Default New power supply in the near future

The other day my PC shut down cold turkey. Just dead. When I pushed the power button, it struggled 3 times to start, then finally powered back on. Today it did it again, but this time I wasn't able to revive it. I investigated the cause and found this:

I can't think of what could have caused this other than human error, or just the age of the PSU. The black you see in the holes is melted plastic from the 20-pin and 4-pin connectors. I tried to scrape out the plastic the best I could, then bent the pins back as straight as I could and luckily it started back up! I can't afford to not have my PC up and running since I'm in school. I figured I'd share this with you guys because it's so bizarre. (i think it is, anyway.)

Overheating of electrical connections is usually caused by them being loose.

It may be that you didn't push them on fully or perhaps at some point in time the plug got disturbed (and thus became loose) during other work.

or it may just be that there has always been an issue with those particular pins/sockets and that time and the power running through those particular connections has heated and cooled these and deposited a little carbon which makes things worse until you end up with the situation you have there.

Happens to mains connections and sockets, if the wiring is not done up tight, too so keep an eye out for the signs.

If you are short on funds to replace this psu then consider using a 24 pin extender .... http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000FL60A...SIN=B000FL60AI

Doing so would mean that at least one side of the existing damage to MB and power lead is connected to a brand new pin/socket and any future damage coming on the psu lead would not effect your MB

edit: you could even cut the old 24 pin plug off and replace it or maybe do a combination of the two cut the old off and splice the cables into the extender

This, and a new PSU is probably what you should do if you can afford to.
I wouldn't trust your board ~or~ the old PSU any more.

EDIT: Just bought this 750W PSU for $71 bucks shipped. It's modular and has one large single RAIL.

I wouldn't trust your board ~or~ the old PSU any more.

EDIT: Just bought this 750W PSU for $71 bucks shipped. It's modular and has one large single RAIL.

Thanks, Stan. I will have to wait a while before I can afford anything.

This does seem like the best solution at the very moment. But even though it's dangerous, I think I will just leave it for now.

I think I may just end up doing a whole new build rather than wasting more money doing fix-ups.

    Jim,

$71.99 is a good price for a modular PSU
$50.00 shipped is a good price for the motherboard that you're selling too.

I would think a student would appreciate such a deal if he has the bucks to get them.
I'm just trying to help out here,...........
