Default Server Motherboards

I've been looking at server components for my next build (not for a few years) just for lolz. I've seen in multiple places that you cannot run SLI/CrossFire on server motherboards, anyone know why? I personally see no reason why not if you could find a server motherboard with a few PCIe x16 slots...

There are a couple of dual purpose server/workstation boards that might suit your purpose, Asus Z9PE-D8 WS... lots of slower cores but lots of slots

Slower cores yes but its also over double the amount of cores available on any consumer level Intel product That is the only dual socket motherboard I have found that actually says it supports SLI/Crossifre although I've only been looking at server boards since they're really the only ones with dual sockets. Only thing about that board is that 24x24 thing, 24 hours a day is great but not when it'll only do that for 2 years >.<

Might have to take a look at Tyan and Supermicros site and see if they have what you need. I know I have seen Opteron Based workstations with dual GpUS and Xeon Workstations with Quad SLI.

I'll have to take a look, been looking at lots of Supermicros haven't seen anything that says it supports SLI/CrossFire though but does that really mean it wouldn't work? I don't know but I do know I'm not in a position to drop 500+ on a motherboard to find out XD

Ideally a mobo to go with 2 of these would be nice Newegg.com - Intel Xeon E5-2690 Sandy Bridge-EP 2.9GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) 20MB L3 Cache LGA 2011 135W 8-Core Server Processor BX80621E52690 Again I have no idea if I'll ever do this but I can dream can't I?

So are you planning a building a server class machine, are you planning a runnings a server OS or workstation.

A few things to keep in mind, finding drivers could be a pain and you will have the possibilty of memory compatiblity issues.

Not really planning on it, would like to though. At this point just looking at the options. I have heard that running something like Windows Server 2008R2 would be a good choice as it supports the hardware and with a few setting changes will act just like Windows 7. About all I know about the memory is that ECC memory is the way to go.

If you take a look at the QVL for memory on that asus you will see that, as well as ecc and reg, you have the choice of normal mem too and one or two types will allow high clocks. As a workstation option you can run win7 if you wish. This is not an option on many of the pure server boards

On the supermicro side of things there is THIS or you could just get the MB Not sure if you would have to run WinServer2K12 on it though as it is a new model.

I really would rather build it myself, is Server2KL12 really that much different from windows 7?

512 gig of ram???
i am assuming at that lvl win7 ultimate would be totaly running in the ram enviroment
and the rom and processor would be barly used at all?
or at least they would be a extreme bottle neck at such low performance lvls as being restricted to just one of those CPU?

I never said this was a logical or practical build, just a because I can build... Also, could just give say 20 of the cores to the WCG XD
