Default OpenCompute servers and AMD Open 3.0

    Quote

The real cool thing about this initiative is that the organisation managed to convince Intel and AMD to standarize certain aspects of the hardware. Yes, they collaborated. The AMD and Intel motherboard will have the same form factor, mounting holes, management interface and so on. The ODM/OEM has to design only one server: the AMD board can be swapped out for the Intel one and vice versa. The Mini-Mezzanine Slot and the way the power supply is connected, it is all standardized.

Go intel? Not really sure what AMD was thinking but I'm pretty sure any intel option would be better than the AMD one.

AMD would probably work fine. They wouldn't be selling them otherwise.

AMD does better when true cores are needed for visualization. 16 real cores go along way in the server market. 32 in dual sockets, 64 real cores in a quad socket. Most cases they run cool enough to put in a 2U rack. Cant beat the footprint for that many cores. Its not always about clock speeds or even throughput in some cases. AMD sells a lot of opterons for a lot of different reasons.

Wait why do servers need so much horsepower anyway!? It would be bottle necked so hard by anything less than a 10 Gbit connection to the interweb XD And I don't think any service would get you that.

With servers, it's not about "balls to the walls" performance delivered to your screen.
It's about managing DATA faster. (A hell of a lot of DATA at once)
They're not even close to the same thing.

Think of it like this. For every network and connected device there is, there needs to be a CPU on the other end to process the data request. Regardless of what kind of data, video, music, webpages or even accessing and saving documents. There needs to be a physical or virtual system to handle it.

10gigabit network has been around since 2007. 100gigabit networks are everywhere,IEEE 802.3ba for backbone networks. It combines multiple 10Gb or 25Gb lines to achieve this speed. Modern servers have 2 10Gb network ports per blade.
