Default PSU Soft Rattle at Higher RPMS

Hi all, I'm brand new here at the forums. I was referred here by The Vinnman.

I have a Rosewill Hive 750. It's been working great and supports my i7 3770k OC'd @ 4.5 GHZ and the 780 Ti just fine. No power issues.

My problem is that when plying games, the PSU fan ramps up a little, as I'm sure is normal, however it's developed this soft rattling at higher RPMs. This PSU fan is, and has been, silent under normal working conditions, i.e. web surfing, streaming movies, Libre Office, photo or video editing, it's quiet/silent. However, when gaming, that's when the soft rattling starts.

I plan to take a closer look, as much as I can without disassembling it, and clean it out to see if there is any improvement; although I do not expect much, if any, due to I have dust filters. But if not, I am considering taking it apart to see if the fan is being lightly obstructed or if it can be replaced/modded. I am a little hesitant though as it is still under warranty. RMA is an option but i'm not sure if it is worth it since it is a minor issue and it will cost me days without a computer.

What do you guys think? Do any of you have any experience with this particular PSU or perhaps quieting an rattling fan?

    Welcome to PureOC!

The rattle could be something a simple as the 4 screws that hold the fan are not tight enough. There is usally a screen of some sort to stop your fingers from going into the blades. I would guess this is what is causing your noise. Get a phillips and see if there is any play in the screws. Make sure they are tight but not so tight your strip them out.

Hey glad to see you finnally made it over Welcome to PureOC it just may be something that simple as tightening down those 4 fan screws up top

I did notice the half moon piece of plastic under the fan from this picture I am wondering if at the higher speeds
that it may be fluttering and causing that soft rattle.

I have used this PSU myself for the past three years. Lovely unit, but mine finally failed on me... I suppose that will happen when you try to take it apart to re-paint it x-D.

That being said, I started to get a similar rattle with mine as well. During a listening session with as quiet a fan settings as I could get while still loading the system, I noticed that it was the primary transformer that was making the noise, not the fan. Of course your mileage may vary but I found that up until I technically broke mine it was pretty quiet up until that happened.

I would RMA it! if its still under warranty, and call them and go pick it up they are local in Whittier
If not and you need a spare in the mean time, I can loan you one till you get the replacement.

^this, +1 rep if we had that sort of system here x-). Sadly MY warranty literally just ended a few days ago, so mine will simply be scrapped for it's fan and the cables so I have more to practice my sleeving with x-D

If not and you need a spare in the mean time, I can loan you one till you get the replacement.
This is a cool thing to do. Nobody lives close to me that is on these forums, so I can't do the same for anyone. Thisi s one of the things that I like about this site.

LOL thanks for the sympathy. It does kind of tick me off, but I half expected it since I tried to mod it... matter of fact that is EXACTLY the reason I figured I'd try to mod it since the warranty was getting ready to go out anyway, so I might as well try lol. Now I know what to expect and how to do it much better than I did before. See the trick is to NOT disassemble the PSU and paint it directly and just fabricate a friggin cover for it out of a sheet of Lexan x-D

I agree with everyone. RMA it if just tightening the screws doesn't help. Its not worth it if its still under warranty. Better to just be on the safe side lol

Oddly enough, I was playing a few games this weekend I did not notice the rattle at all; and the last time I heard it it was when it was when the fan was winding down. I'll keep an eye...or ear, in this case, on it. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Especially you Vinman for offering the loaner!

See you guys on another post : )
