    Default notebooks, need help

    greetingz,

i got some general questions that others may find usefull, and some questions that are for me mostly
so 10th of august will be my birthday and i thought i'll ask for a laptop. but since these things come in all kinds of "shapes" it got me thinking what sould i get.
first i thought it should be an intel model because heard amds products are not quite the best, but then should it be a Pentium M or a Core Duo. the 1st would be a cheaper solution i think, but with intel's new Core 2 Duo mobile processors would it be worth going for the 2nd option and upgrade the core to core 2 later?
but is it really worth it? i wanna use it as an extra for university, the biggest stress it would face is compiling programs, dont really have gaming ambitions on it. and there is the power consumption, is a pentium m relatively good at this?
also i was thinking i might try out the 3D desktop developed for linux, does it require some not-so-ordinary video card? or is it even recomended to use it on a laptop?
ok this is enough for now

well , amd new turion x2's cant compare good with core duo , so get a core duo , penitum M isnt a good cpu IMO , (if going single , then amd turion is good ) also u cant use merom(core 2 duo mobile) for a notebook which has core duo on it, it needs new socket , u must buy a new laptop ,

u sure about that? from wikipedia:
"Intel has stated that the first version of Merom will be drop-in compatible with the current Core Duo platform, requiring at most a BIOS update. It will have the same thermal envelope and the same 667 MT/s bus rate."

    did i misunderstood something?
