They're approached by companies offering them money to include ~crap-ware~ in their programs. It's a lot of money when it's compounded by hundreds of thousands of installations. (maybe millions) So they decide that it aint so bad after all and maybe we will not mind it.

    I do mind,.......

yeah I am in the same school as you Neil with all the bloat on some of these esp AVG bloat and some of there other 'misques' of recent memory. So defintely sticking with my free Avast and Malwarebytes and run the scans.

With as many PCs as there are here, I cannot afford a paid solution. Hence MSE and Malwarebytes Free. So far, no infections, no runs, no drips,..........

As some of the others have said.. Eset Smart Security (Nod32) is one of the best I have used in years.. combine it with malwarebytes and the extra protection works like a charm. that is if you are going to pay for it.. I got a 1 yr subscription for 3 computers on sale for $15 bucks a while back, and I have been using it since and even renewed.

I've used Norton (sucks donkey Butt)
Kaspersky - was ok but used more resources then it really need to
bitdefender - didn't really like it much.

Free onces I have tried are:
    AVG
    Comodo
    Avast
    MSE

and of them all MSE was the best for me.. IMO MSE doesn't come with any of the add and bloatware which is why I like it.. Again combine those with Malwarebytes and shouldn't have any issues.

    +1. Love MSE

I also scan with Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D.
