Default Keyboard not working (any keyboard) in OS.

OK, this one has got me frustrated. I'm trying to fix a PC for a friend whose keyboard stopped working. It works fine in BIOS. It works fine in virtual XP (using FalconFour to boot it). BUT... when I allow it to boot into Vista (yes, it runs Vista) the keyboard stops responding completely. No keys do anything, not even the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys. During boot I can turn Num Lock or Caps Lock on or off, but whatever state those indicators are in on the keyboard when it logs in, they stay that way. ALL KEYS DO NOTHING once Vista loads, even in Safe Mode.

I'm really tearing my hair out on this one. I'm thinking that a driver file or something is corrupted (or infected). I've already removed quite a few malware programs using ADWcleaner and Glary and the only thing I have left to do now is manually go through and remove any clutter programs that they didn't automatically get rid of, but I'm doubting it will help the keyboard issue.

ANyone have any ideas on this one, or could direct me to the related drivers and files to delete and replace?

    Uhhh...that's a tough one.

Does the Keyboard show up in Device Manager?

Also, is it PS2 or USB?

Multiple keyboards have been used. All USB (has no PS2 ports), some wired some wireless. Everything shows normal in device manager. I've uninstalled them, then "scan for hardware changes" and let windows reinstall them. No change. Gonna try installing a a keyboard and mouse utility program (even though plug-and-plays don't need them) just to try and get the device drivers to change and see what happens. Really running out of ideas.

OK, at a guess, the USBhid.sys driver is not getting loaded. The generic USB driver is being loaded if you "see" the Keyboard in Dev Manager, but the "Human Interface Device" portion (Keyboard / Mouse Driver) isn't being setup.

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...=vs.85%29.aspx

Contains some information on what needs to be there and what it does. I'd do a search for usbhid.sys and see what you can find...(If you can use the on-screen keyboard to type the search!).

    Alternatively, perhaps a System Restore?<deleted>.

Sorry I don't have better suggestions...

Sounds like a corrupt registry with the controller or driver that hosts the USB ports.

Are other devices working in the USB ports?
Have you tried plugging in the keyboard on the front USB ports rather then rear?

Does anything else work in any usb port ??

I am thinking to re-install the MB drivers as it seems common that there are different ones for different chipsets

You might also consider running chameleon and malwarebytes in safe mode

Oh, thought I included it in the first post... USB mouse works fine and both mouse and keyboard(s) behave the same in all 4 ports. It only has rear USB. That's how I've been working with it is using the mouse for on-screen keyboard. Haven't run CCCleaner yet, but checked the registry with Glary. Guess I'll do that next. Forgot CCCleanr had that function. I haven't used it in a while.

    Hummph.

I'm stumped. GrumpyDaddy and Solara have probably hit the nail on the head. I think I'd try a clean install to a different partition or grab a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 disk and do a clean install. As pointed out, re-installing ALL the Motherboard drivers might be a good option too. The fact that the mouse works (a USBHID device) undermines the idea that the USB stack is the problem, so the generic Keyboard driver would seem to be the culprit. It does make me think a malfunctioning keylogger might be to blame (still), but the less paranoid ideas are certainly more likely.

Backup, wipe and re-install is my recommendation!

Oh, the malfunctioning keylogger idea was one of my original suspicions and it still is one of the only remaining possibilities. My only other likely cause at this point is registry corruption of some kind that utilities aren't detecting. Either way, it's really looking like a re-install is the best option. My friend is still "thinking about it" because apparently the idea of having to "put all her programs back on it" is the end of the world. lol

We'll see. I like the partition idea, though. I wonder if I can make the factory OS install discs install onto a partition instead of wiping the whole drive. Their Dell supplied discs that say "Only for complete re-install of Vista" on them so I'm not sure, but I'm up for trying it at this point.

I have had this problem and it was the USB driver. Had to use a PS2 mouse to get into windows and to reinstall correct driver. Since there isnt one you are boned sir. only option is finding a wireless KB using Bluetooth because most RF KBs use the same driver as standard KBs. May not work for you. BT is different, Buy one fix PC, return it to the store. lol

Oh, I had no trouble getting in to Windows, and reinstalled every driver I could think of (using on-screen keyboard) but none of it worked. I ended up getting permission to do a clean install and everything works fine now.

I was tempted to do some research on how keyloggers usually attack the registry and take a deep dive into that, but getting her PC back to her in working order the next day was more important.

It sure sounds like something was interfering with the Keyboard IO. The more I think about it, the less I think it's a keylogger though. As I recall, the way Windows distributes IO messages from the Keyboard/Mouse/etc, is through messages, which I think are broadcast anyway.

It seems more like some odd driver/config problem in the USB / Generic Keyboard driver stack.

    Certainly strange.

    Glad you solved it!!!

Keyloggers dont normally prevent you from typing. It would be a waste of someones time to stick it on there. lol
