I'm preferential to AVAST! If I'm looking at free solutions (which I always am). But I'm just Running the Microsoft thing on my gaming box right now, and it seems OK. I'll probably put AVAST on it soon though.

    AV Test: https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus...ows/windows-8/

    And

AV Comparatives: AV-Comparatives Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - AV-Comparatives

Both rate Bitdefender pretty highly, with Avast! (Among others) coming in slightly behind them!

Webroot Secure Anywhere is the best one that I've tried. It uses the least system resources and works the best.

Don't download stupid stuff and then you need nothing or next to nothing. In an emergency use Spybot and Ad-Aware and just use the free versions as that may be all you likely need.

    A little update.

I was about to install Bitdefender Free, when I discovered it wasn't (yet) compatible with Win10. So...after spending some time digging through the results on Av-comparatives, I decided to try Avira. We'll see how it goes. Just installing it now.

I still swear by Webroot Secure Anywhere and it's compatible with any OS except Linux. (even Win-10)
Newegg has some wicked good sales on it every now and then. I just paid $18.00 for 6 devices for one year. ($9.00 for three devices twice)

I use it on my PCs and Android Phones.

Default Re: Which anti virus for win 10?

I get you. I just refuse to pay for AntiVirus software. Back in the day, the engine lasted a few years, and you could get updates for a nominal fee. Now, every vendor wants to add a whole bunch of other crap to the AV, and charge your $20-$50/pc/year. I blame Norton for this sad state of affairs.

I try to avoid risky web behaviors, and use as lightweight an AntiVirus package as possible. I then add in CCleaner, SpyBot and Malwarebytes (typically), and I've rarely (almost never) had a problem. I periodically scan for rootkits and other unwanted software, but that's more routine maintenance than anything.

I've used Avast! and AVG for years, and I've tried a few others. So far, Avira seems OK for a free scanner. It tries to push upgrades constantly (and IMO it's expensive), but seems to have a lightweight impact on system resources, and has caused no noticeable degradation in performance due to on-access scanning, etc. Once BitDefender is out for Win10 in it's free version, I'll try that.

According to AV Comparatives October Test, Avira, BitDefender, Kapersky & Trend had the only Perfect detection scores, and of those, Avira had 1 false positve, Trend had 12 (!), while BitDefender and Kapersky had 0. Sadly, Webroot isn't on the AV Comparitives October Report. In fact, I can't find it on Virus Bulletin, AV Comparatives, or AV-Test. That's frustrating.

At the end of the day, I think it ends up being the application you are most comfortable with. If you practice reasonable surfing practices, and practice reasonably good security in general, I think _MOST_ AV's will probably work. At that point, having one you LIKE is probably better than analyzing the performance endlessly. I tend to gauge my choices by the above websites and how much the applications annoy me. At various times I've switched from Avast! Free to AVG or vice versa because they became too intrusive on my daily use of the PC.

I'm looking at Paid versions too, just on a whim, and Kapersky offers 5 Device coverage for $59 for 1 Year, with a 15% off code that pops up when you're looking at it...so that's $50.15 for 5 for a year. Not bad, although they default to Auto-Renew, which means you'll pay the full $100 next year when it auto-renews...lol, oh and a Disk is an extra $9.99, and because they offer "Extended Download Service" for another $10, I imagine your window to download your purchase is very limited. Grrr.

    Sorry...Ranting on this. </Rant>

Just to throw my 2 cents worth here. Been using Avast free for a few years now, replacing AVG. Currently have it on 2 systems with win7pro, 2 with win10. I back them up with random checks using Malewarebytes and Super anti-spy. I have had my eye on ESET for some time now, used the trial a couple times and noticed a slight improvement in boot speed and no drag online. ESET is usually ranked in the top three, if not 1. They have some great prices this time of year so it's worth checking out.

ESET is a good product for sure. Didn't their Anti-Virus used to be called Nod-32 or something like that?

When it comes down to it though, I just can't pay for these products. Call me cheap, but for the most part, I see very little difference between the premium packages and the free packages. In fact, in most cases, the free packages are more appealing because they don't contain all the random crap these companies throw in there (firewalls, social media scanners, system cleaners, etc). Give me the slimmed down, just the Antivirus Scanner package every day!

    Sorry for Highjacking this thread...

The nod-32 is their core av. They also have a full package called ESET Smart Security and another called Multi-Device Security.

Totally agree with you, Neil. I use Webroot on three of my PCs and it has been great. Runs perfectly on Win 10, easy to use interface and the sale prices are great. I think I paid $8 for a year for three devices on a NewEgg sale.
