    Here's some counterpoints:

    1) High end graphics today have upwards of 2 Teraflops of FPU power.. each. Through CUDA and OpenCL, anybody who knows how to write a program in C can use these cards to do brute force attacks. Here is an article about recent research on the topic.

    2) Truecrypt is not (or was not) impeccable. It has some vulnerabilities (or at least it did in 2008) that can be exploited to reduce the complexity of the brute force attack.

    3) In 2006 (or perhaps earlier), the US Secret Service started building a botnet of up to 100,000 computers, eventually to encompass all of Homeland Security - for the express purpose of cracking encryption. Now, imagine they start to harness modern graphics cards into that mix. The world's fastest supercomputer runs at 2.3 petaflops (2300 teraflops). Imagine a botnet that has 200 to 500 petaflops of power... ummm that a s**t-load faster than the top supercomputer. I highly doubt they're utilizing modern graphics card across a 100k botnet, but I think it's only a matter of time
And, with every passing generation, GPUs are getting stronger and stronger. And in general, people are still lazy in regards to the complexity and length of their passwords, even if encrypted by Truecrypt.

    4) Most passwords are not a 2k sized file as a random cipher, or a proper mix of upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols, nor are they long enough. If the drive referenced in Lil' Dead's original article did not use a password that was overly complicated, say a keylength of 12, and perhaps they were able to ascertain a portion of the possible password through social engineering, they could have very well cracked it.

Look, I don't trust what the FBI says to the public, nor their intent. They could have cracked it and then lied about it. Or they could have failed and told the truth. Either way, unless the dude used a key cipher 20 digits long or longer, it will eventually be cracked if there's enough incentive to work on it.

And that's my $1 and 5 cents on the matter.
I don't know how it is in the USA, but here in post-soviet Russia no one can hack Truecrypted HDD and here's the thing to think about. Well as I know from my own experience of using Truecrypt you can set 2 different passwords (one of them is phony and if it's hit first then you lose access to encrypted files forever unless you got back-up) and put an app that corrupts the data (that's a master key file that can be backed up, by the way but to do that of course one has to know one's way around Python) if it's being brute forced. Well my question is how's the FBI gonna hack the password that doesn't exist, to wit is corrupted, in the first place, huh?

if this is the only way of safe encryption then it is absolutely the only option.

if it is the ONLY option i am wondering why today is the first time i have ever heard of it
    obviously im a slow pickup

Why was this thread resurrected? Are there Truecrypt spambots trolling Google?
