    Default EVGA video card question..

    Hi All,

It's been a while since I upgraded my PC (and unfortunately a long time since I've been on this forum) and I usually buy Asus kit. I went into my local component shop to pick up a replacement mouse and caved in to an impulse buy of an EVGA GTX 480SC to replace my Asus 285 Matrixes. Once I'd replaced the Matrix cards, updated to the latest Nvidia drivers, everything looked okay until I played Bad Company 2 online for a couple of hours. My TV went white and the game hanged with my only option to kill the process from task manager. I've since installed EVGA Precision and set the fans to auto, but that didn't seem to cure the crashing. I then tried playing with the fan on 100% but it still crashed to a white screen. I've tried putting my CPU fan speed in Asus AI Suite to 100% and that seemed to give me stability, but I didn't keep playing for as long as previously.

Can anyone tell me which utilities are a must have with EVGA video cards? I also presume Furmark will be a good way to check that the crashing is due to the video card, not the CPU. I'll have to have another look as to what Asus apps boot up that are specific to the video cards too...

    Thanks in advance!

    welcome back!

was your CPU overclock when it crashes or GPU overclock at all?

You can use furmark to test the Vid but it supposes to pass the QC test before it reaches to consumers. Doesn't hurt to test it anyway and keep an eye on the temp, 480 runs pretty hot. I'm not rubbing this to your face but you should have purchase the 580 instead. This new card is kick ass the 480 and run much cooler.

BTW, did you install the latest driver for the card?

    Hi Deton!

Yeah, I installed 260.99 before using it...my CPU is stock, the only thing I did was to give the heatsink and fan cages a good blast of canned air while I had the sides of the case off. Unless I knocked the CPU area, it should be as stable as it was before.

The 480 was on offer for that week and the 580 is ~40% more expensive, so I'd rather SLI the 480 in the near future. It was an impulse after all..not researched or calculated The 480 is stock overclocked to 726/3800/1451...

I just wonder if I've got some Asus software lurking around that I should remove, I'll have to check later, after all, I struggled to get everything working for the Matrix cards in SLI...

Ah, good point, Bob, although I've never used anything like that before. I just wonder whether it'll remove anything specific to the now missing 285s or if there's too much Asus stuff installed from all the apps the motherboard needs and it'll skip it all.

I think it's more a driver issue than the hardware here. I'm assuming you did uninstall the driver for 285?

I think it is better to uninstall of Nvidia driver and use driver sweep to make sure they are all clean then reinstall the 480 driver. Hope it works for you this time around.

    Hi Jack,

For me i will go for EVGA's Precision Utility which is a MUST HAVE. What i do is to enable On-Screen-Display feature and select all the most important information like: GPU/PCB Temperatures, GPU usage etc... that way i have visibility and able to monitor essential information during gaming sessions in of overheating, fan speed etc...

If Detons driver sweep suggestion does. Not work, EVGA does provide 24/7 customer service 24 hours a day but not sure about holidays.

Thanks everyone for the help, I did do a clean sweep of drivers but I still encountered the problem. I have managed to fix it though by forcing DX11 in the settings.ini file of the game. *sigh*

Might as well check your Fan Speed settings in EVGA Precision Utility that all is ok.
